I just recently purchased a 1998 SRX with 2914 miles on it, the guy I bought it from bought it used and he wasn't sure if the crankshaft was ever rewelded. I know the 1998 SRX's had crankshaft issues and most people I talked to said Yamaha repaired under warranty. My VIN # is 8DN-002485. I called Yamaha and they couldn't give me any good answers on whether or not this unit was in under warranty. Wondering if Yamaha had this issue fixed before the 2485th unit rolled off the line. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has a 98 SRX and knows the VIN please chime in. Thanks. I cannot wait to see how this stacks up against my 07 Apex.

YAMAHA HAD VERY EARLY TECH BULLETINS UP TO 2000 ON THE CRANK ISSUE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Take off your primary clutch and check the case by the pto. I believe there should be some numbers etched into the case if it was fixed. It is on mine.

There should be a mark in the tunnel beside the vin# A lot of dealers used a punch & put a mark at the end of the sn.

Ok thanks for clearing that for me Tony. I always was under the impression that was for the crank.

COREY, YOUR CORRECT. IT IS FOR THE CRANK. 3:16 (yammie tony)
It doesnt really matter, some were welded and some were not, in fact my new 98 never had the crank done, it was fine and still is even today, I know the current owner and the sled has almost 8000 miles on it. When they went out youd notice a vibration in the handlebars or it wouldnt pull peak rpm of 8400.
I just would simply remove the primary clutch, put a dial indicator on the crank snout right next to the seal and check for run out, anything over .004-.005" and it needs trued in my opinion, some will go more, if under that run it.................

When my 1998 700 was brand new, the crankshaft twisted on a trip to the U.P. in less than 200 miles. Came out of a corner, leaned into the throttle and it started vibrating. If your crankshaft twists, you will know it. Turn over the motor and observe the drive clutch....it will be very obvious. The clutch end of the crankshaft should miss-align first (according to Yamaha) being the segment seeing all the power. Took it to the dealer, who is a very good friend, he had a replacement crankshaft from Yamaha in a couple days. I agreed to do all the labor, he provided gaskets, etc. Got the new welded crank home and was very dis-appointed in it's condition....surface rust and looked like crap. Took it back to the dealer and decided to fix my crank myself. Have assembled cranks before, so trued and welded it myself. After 3,000 miles, had no further problems.
