Hey gang, first I would like to say thank you to all the TY contributors for all the great info on this site!
In the past I have had bad luck with carb maintenance on my other toys, so I am gonna take my new to me viper to a friend of a friend so he can give me a carb cleaning lesson. The how-to in the tech pages is awesome, but I don't trust myself to do it alone the first time.
The sled came from the east coast, I ride it in alts of 180' to 1200', and in temps of -20 celsius at the coldest. She only gets about 5-6 mpg riding on-trail, and semi-conservatively, and seems to drink oil. She cold starts in about 7-8 pulls. But she ran pretty good at the end of the season last year. I did a few searches on fouled plugs after I pulled out the plugs today. They were covered in grainy oily bits and not looking very good. I am guessing I should have a look at the reeds, and the power valves as well.
Any tips/observations/jokes![Smile :) :)](https://totallyamaha.net/images/smilies/smile.png)

How old are those plugs? They look to me like they are low speed trail ridden plugs, with a generous amount of oil. Did you pull these plugs after a long pull at a particular throttle range?

Got the sled in feb '10 with those plugs in her, they don't look too old. The sled runs great but bogs a little when its really warm (32f).
Ya they are low speed trail ridden. The connector trail to my house is about 5 miles long, super twisty and kinda residential, so I dont wind her out much (i have a trail can too so I keep her quiet when close to houses).
I'm not much of a speed freak either, usually ride trails at 40-60mph, and most of my riding is off-trail. I'd like to get a bit better mileage though, I'll burn 2 tanks of gas riding from my house to our "mountain" and back, including a couple hours playing in fresh snow.

ya but with speeds like that your plugs shouldnt look like that. But as far as mileage how many kms u getting on a tank

If your plugs look like that your PV are going to be a mess. It looks like your burning way to much oil. Should be about a QT per tank of gas. How is your cable setting? Might want to check oil pump also. When they fail they fail wide open so you dont blow engine. I would think that looks about wide open to me. Here is Damans post for cable adj with pics. Check that first. Even if you were pushing your sled at idel they shouldnt look that carboned up so im sure you can guess what your PV's will look like. This will kill the MPG also. CCC

You better have someone take a look at the power valves. They are probably going to be very tough to remove with all that carbon buildup.

If you viper is all stock motor wise, Im sure some of the members here can also tell you what jetting to run. I would share my jetting, however my sled is triple piped this has a huge affect on jetting.
Or look at Yamaha's stock jetting chart for your temperature and elevation, and when you go to tear the carbs down, you can confirm that you are jetted right.
However, as others have mentioned, I would check the oil pump cable adjustment.

I get about 56 miles to the tank - about 90 km i guess.
Ya stock motor, I will make note of the jetting and compare with spec.
Thanks guys for the info, those are the dirtiest plugs I've ever pulled out of any of my yammies(mostly bikes) - and sounds like my suspicions were bang on. I will measure the cable gap tomorrow, but will call in a favour with the local yam expert and see if he can have a look.
thanks again,
Rob

jetting
looks like your jetting and oil consumption are way off. you should be able to get about 100 miles on a tank of fuel @ 1 qt. of oil.
i wanna say 142.5 mains 50 pilots 1.75 fuel screw and lean the oil pump a bit. havent run sea level jetting in four years so dont quote me on that. i know mine really liked to have fat pilots.

+1 on an oil pump problem. last time i saw ones like that was when an oil pump was set wide open on an et340.

Turns out there was a cracked boot, the oil pump cable a bit too tight, and gummed up pv's. Carb was pretty clean, jetting is stock, and I realize now I should be running synthetic oil - this is my first pv machine and didnt know that the cheap oil is not worth the savings.
