Going to install a Viper rear skid in my SRX, and wondering what to do with the front.

What do you all recommend for a better ride and increased ride height?

I will sacrifice handling for some actual comfort!

If actual comfort is what you are looking for, do not put a Viper skid in it. I dont not think there is even much if any different between the SRX and Viper skids, unless you have ohlens....

you will have more travel, but the same crappy ride. To raise the front the correct way you need to lenghten the radius rods or get the viper front parts also.

One thing I was thinking about doing was finding a set of fox shocks off a late 90's or early 2000's cat or polaris that were about 14 1/2 -15" long. They were a decent rebuildable shock and they would bolt right onto the srx and raise your front end without having to change radius rods or steering linkage. Can't see why that wouldn't work.

i found a set of ohlins that were 15" i used up front, was a perfect match for the rear viper ohlins i had in in the skid. really made a hell of a sled out of the srx. and as for the skids, they are the same, all you really need is the rear shock(it is a little longer) and after its done will have to make sure limiter straps are adjusted righ couse your ski pressure will be off and may not steer very well, and adjust your camber of the spindles also. some srx's came with the longer radius rods and some didnt so that is something you will have to find out. mine rode and handled awsome but it did make it a little more tipsy in high speed cornering.

fox shocks

i just put my fox shocks up for sale 15.5 center to center they came off my srx they work fine 150 plus shipping i can email pics if you want

My srx has a viper rear skid and it is a HE@# of a lot more plush than the stock srx skid was. I have not raised the front end yet but am planning on it soon. My radius rods have been extended 1" on each side and am ready for long travel shocks now. I will go against the grain on this subject and recomend the viper skid swap...I weigh 160lbs and compare its performance to an xtra 12 Polaris suspension.

the polaris's extra 12's were junk, i wouldn't compare anything to those. if you want to keep the back low with a good ride, i thinkt he polaris xtra 10 suspension would be the way to go. rode nice and it's what is in the 2000-03 XCR's.

I'd go along with Winterfunguy and say the Viper skid is a huge improvement over the SRX but they were designed for different types of riding. IMO the pro-action gets a well deserved bad rap mainly because of the crappy pivot point bushings. My SRX skid was trashed after the first season and unlike my previous Polaris skids required major over-hauling. Pulling the skid every year wasn't required of the Polaris' I've owned but is with the pro-action.

Having said that and hind-sight being 20/20, I'd have put an extra-10 in my SRX instead of the Viper skid but when the Viper skid is tight and tweeked it performes well but is only half the solution. Viperizing the front susp (increased travel AND widening) completes the package.

The extra-12 was a comfortable skid but wasn't designed for aggressive riding. The extra-10 was.

The major issue with both the extra-10 and 12 was the crappy Fox shocks or more specific the crappy Fox oil.

Obviously you are not an owner of an xtra 12 nore have you ever been, you are just bashing it because it is not a Yammie. If you had ever even had the oppertunity to ride on one you would not be as quick to bash. Mine had Ryde FX electronic adjustable dampening on it and had 10k on it when I sold my sled...It is now over 12k and still rides like it did when I bought it a 2k miles. It had awesome weight transfer and handled the michigan washboard trails with ease AND I NEVER HAD TO REPAIR IT!!!!! If Im acting like I am taking offense to your uneducated comment....I did!!!! :bash:

You know what they say about opinions... Thats why I preface mine with IMO so as not to offend anyone.

Having said that, IMO - there was a reason Polaris created the extra-10 and didn't stuff the 12 into the XCR. Comparing the XLT to the XCR the monoblock 600 sat 1 inch lower in the chassis in the XCR than the XLT for a lower CG. In other words the XLT was more of a touring sled vs. the XCR (cross country racer) so again IMO the extra-10 would be better suited for an SRX vs. the 12.

And as you said you don't have to service EVERY year.

Yes Snomofo oppinions can be taken wrong...maybe I did. I had xtra 12's in both XLT's and my 10,000 mile 2000XC700DLX and all performed well for me. FYI Polaris did indeed put the xtra 12 in the 2001 XCR800 due to the ability of having handle bar controll of the front shock dampening for race/trail convenience....soften it up for race...make it a little more firm for trail...all in 5 seconds!

Didn't know about the 800 with the extra - 12. I had a white '96 (first full year for the extra 10) and wish I had put one in my SRX before going the Viper route. Even with adding grease points I still yank it every year and find something wrong with it. But once it's adjusted I'm overall pretty happy with it.
