Hi,

I just bought a 2003 SX Viper ER with ~900miles on it. Before I start riding it I wanted to see if there are any fixes or updates that I should take care of. Also would appreciate any thoughts on problem area's to keep an eye out for. I will mainly be using sled for trail riding and am more concerned with reliability than performance (stock is good enough for my needs).

Thanks

Joe

Joe, my thoughts on this subject are simple.

Clean the carbs first, and probably clean the power valves as well. Just give it a good overall tune-up. Look over everything and make sure it looks good. Check the clutch and make sure it looks good. Grease up what needs grease.

If you just do a good tune-up, and keep up the maintenance, that sled will last you a long time. Those motors, if taken care of are bulletproof. They can do 15,000 Miles fairly easy if taken care of, and treated correctly.

Thanks

Thanks for the inputs, much appreciated. So I take it your not aware of any "common" issues I need to worry about.

Thanks

Joe

Only "common" issue that comes to mind other than stuff caused by dirty cars or dirty powervalves, or caused by NOT doing other preventative maintenance would on the Vipers be installing a torque limiter on the engine.
Reason for this is that the Viper engines shift on the motor mounts and this resulats in a fair number of broken motor mounts, which can cause some major headaches.

If you do a search of "torque limiter" in the search area, there is LOTS of info about why, and HOW to install one.

Alot of guys also suggest adding a rear heat exchanger to the Vipers as they do have a problem with not enough cooling, especially when in low snow conditions. That is also something that by doing a search for "viper rear heat exchanger" you can find LOTS of info on as well.

Hope this helps a bit.

wiring harness

the wiring harness tends to chaffe under the motor where it rises over the support bracket. remove harness and check for chaffing and reinstall with wire loom shielding. symptoms will be a flickering headlight or dash among others.

Thanks for the additional inputs, I will check into torque limiter, rear exchanger & wire loom!!!!
