I have page 2-28 in the service manual opened up, and it says the adjustment is just to turn the bolt in until it is finger tight, and then tighten the locknut.

That's it? I thought I read some posts here about taking the cover off and making a measurement.

Some say finger tight and then back off 1/4 turn, but yes that's all there is to it.

I remove the cover from the chaincase every year to take a close look at the chain and to clean out the accumulation of metallic debris. The gasket is reuseable so it costs nothing but a little more time. You would be surprised how much metallic debris builds up. With the cover off, I wash the case out with a light oil such as WD-40. I go finger tight with the adjustment screw being careful to hold the adjustment screw with a wrench whil tightening the locknut, otherwise the adjuster bolt can turn which will make the chain too tight.
