went for my first ride, everything good for about 5 km's and then things went bad.Motor started to missfire or something.Tach and headlight stopped working. The light on dash is flashing 3 times only once..not steady.Somehow limped home thinking omg..hope I don't screw up the motor.Stopped several time..seemed to help me get going better for a few seconds and stopped again..over and over. The motor idles good..soon as you give her gas it sputters and misses.Came home, stopped and started again..on start up the light flashes it's usual 3 time...but flickering.Rev it up a bit, headlight comes back on but flickers and dim. Then the light flashes 3 times again..but flickering. What the hell is going on here.I will check the compression to see if I hurt anything to.....

Sounds electrical...
-check TPS[try bypassing it]
-any wires plugged in incorrectly after rebuild?
-any wires grounding out some where?
-wiring harness issues, grounding out, rub through, poor connection?
I had a visor heater wire ground out on me on one of my SXs and the tach + headlight came on and off. I have heard that problems with thumb warmers + hand grips can cause this as well.

the warmers worked great this morning. The 3 flashes refer to a thumb warmer issue apparently.Wires are all re-routed from under the motor to over the pull start.Nothing should be touching any metal, got a new batch of black tape over the harness wires before I put the motor back.I'll have to try unplugging things to see if there is a difference. But why the hell if a thumb warmer issue are the tach and headlights not working..stumped here..
Motor is good..being a top end rebuild and only 6 miles on it..compression #'s are still in the 120 zone across.Plugs are brown in color also..so not a re-build issue of course, but had to check it.

by the way I have testers but really don't know how to use them to check resistence and the such....

I think I might have found it Bob.I ran the motor again and noticed a sparking at the #1 PTO exhaust pipe right on the band that goes around the exhaust pipe that holds the shields in place.Remember how guys and me included take the wiring harness from unde then motor and re-route it up and over the pull start.Well as far as I can see with a flashlight, the damn wire is running under that pipe.Betcha the friggin heat from the pipe melted thru the black tape and a few wires after it heated up enough and now the wire or wires are grounding out to the friggin pipe.Holy SH*T..you mean to say I would do that to myself..yep!

Great you found it! Should be an easy fix.
The Tach and headlites acting up seems to always be a result of a power wire shorting to ground somewhere and because of the way the hand warmers and thumb warmers work they can be a likely suspect to check first, obviously not the case this time though.

yep.Instead of running the harness actually down and up over the starter..I ran it top of of the coolant hoses in that area.Of course the harness sits higher at that point and were waiting for a BBQ..lol.Lucky the motor didn't just stop.An area was melted good but only 2 wires were mashed together.Had to cut them and use a joiner fitting to get them back together..
What a waste of riding time today.I need to get some miles on the SRX for break-in and today was a nice day and had a few good spots to run.Snow coming Monday and high winds,so won't be oiut tomorrow.I want to break her in on a more of a packed trail instead of busting drifts and deep snow.
With only 6 miles on her, compression is still at the 120 mark across.Need to get them numbers up.
Tach and lights working again and engine revs up nicely....
GO RIDERS GO...sorry mod (Pascal)
..hehehehe!!!
game starting,got to go.
