I recently bought an srx 700, finally had a chance to try it out today. Seemed to work ok but felt like a dog compared to my vmax-4. I know my vmax-4 works good but not that good. I checked under the hood of the srx and there was unburnt fuel and oil spitting out of the end of one of the powervalves. Is this indicative of a pull through? I have been through the carbs and cleaned them very thoroughly. Clutches are good, I replaced a bushing in the rear and replaced springs in both. This sled would pull about 8000 rpms but just didnt have the snap I was expecting. any advice?

the oily mess you are seeing, is from a leaky power valve seal, and the mess leaking out the little drain hole, on the bottom of the power valve housing. you probably have some pulled thru power valves. pull them out and clean/readjust them and repair any pull thrus. replace that seal while in there.

Its time to get into the valves yes they wont make power with just one stuck valve. The o ring is shot at the cable end causeing the leak.

thanks for the quick responses, I will be tearing into them powervalves as soon as I can. Vmax-4's dont have them so this is new territory for me.

well it seems the o-ring was good but the cable was broken on that powervalve so Im assuming the o-ring didnt have enough pressure on it to make a good seal. The powervalves themself seem in decent shape, pretty dirty but nothing some cleaning cant fix up. Gonna check the dealer for a price on a new cable but chances are i'll be looking for a used one.

a broken cable will do it. i knew there was something up w/your power valves, when you said that it didn't have power.

yeah it was quite a disappointment for my first ride on an srx, I was expecting to need surgery to return my arms to the original length. But at least the problem has been identified, and barring anything else, I should have it running right before too long.

update...fixed powervalve cable and adjusted valves, re-fixed secondary clutch bushing, adjusted clutches for 8ch belt, cleaned carbs, cut back plug wires 1/2 inch, dropped pilots down to 40's turned screws out to 2. All I can say now is thanks totallyamaha for all the help. Sled is now running great, I raced my bone stock '93 vmax 750. Well i was on the 750 and I was giving up 60 lbs in rider weight but in an open field the 750 could not beat the srx, it was dead even. distance was about 500'.
hard snow pack road(almost ice), close to 1000', different outcome. the srx ran away each time, my 750 was just spinning and spinning some more. Both sleds 0 studs. Im happy as can be, Im gonna turn the screws in a little bit on the 700, seems a little doggy, and then I should have it. For some reason I did feel a little defeated, even though both sleds were mine.
