2000 SRX700.This thing is has been a belt eater and I'm trying to get clutch temps down.I ride a lot of ungroomed bush trails in plenty of virgin snow and find my secondary is not bad,usually about 100 F,but the primary gets to 150 to 180 F then you hear the telltale flak,flak,flak of the cords letting go and that's that.OEM belts or aftermarket,same thing.Runs cool extended wide open on the fireguard,it's the deep stuff that's the problem.Had a nasty overrev when I bought it but is good now with stock weights 4.5 inner,5.5 outer,ywy.Secondary has green@90 wrap.Tight wrap seems to help in powder by holding the upshift.Would the 54/44 helix help me or is there something else I could try.I'll sacrifice hard pack performance to get some belt life in powder.Trying to keep frugal with any upgrades,spent a ton of cash on this sled in normal repairs and belts(6)past year.
 
Alignment is bang on and center to center is also correct.I just did the top end of the engine and checked all fasteners to the engine when it was apart including the torque arm.I think I just don't have enough clamping force on the belt or something.
 
High belt and clutch temps is a sign of too much belt slippage. I find our Yamahas are particularly sensative to any snow/moistute getting on the clutch faces. The fact that you ride in fresh snow mostly means you are probably on and off the throttle lots, creeping and exsposing the clutches to snow...all producing lots of belt slippage.

If the clutches and belt are all in top shape then try closing up any potential access for the snow to get into the belly pan and on to the clutches . You may also want to try lower gearing so the clutches are not working so hard.

When we have deep snow conditions and I know I am going to be off trail I close up all the lower vents on my SRX + SXs.
