OK, so I'm trying to get my buddies 99 srx 600 running right. At storage last Spring the sled ran fine, now it doesn't. I took the carbs off and cleaned them good, twice, now starts up fine and idles fine but when I slowly rev up to engagement the idle hangs around 4000 rpms. All jets are stock and I got the fuel screws out two turns now. Carb boots are tight with no leaks, idle rpm around 1800 rpm, throttle cable adjusted properly, fresh gas, what am I missing?
The idle will hang for a few seconds before coming done
Sounds allot like TORS...You sure you have the cable adjusted correctly?

The idle wont come down unless I choke it, so I know its a lean condition, but why? The free play in the cable is adjusted correctly. How does something go from running good at storage to having lean carb issues after a good carb cleaning in the fall?
Clean the carbs again. I know you did them already but maybe you missed something. Can't hurt to clean them again.
My 2002 SRX was doing the same thing this fall. I cleaned the carbs paying special attention to the pilot circuit...problem solved.
You may also want to have a good look at the throttle syncronization, check the carb boots for cracks, and check the reed cage gaskets as well.

I've had the carbs off four times now to clean, could they really still be plugged somewhere. All three spark plugs have a white tip, if a boot was cracked or a reed cage gasket leaked would all three cylinders run lean?
Only the cylinder with the air leak would normally run lean.

what about a gummed up fuel pump or filter?

If it was a fuel supply issue that was bad enough to give a high idle[just like running out of fuel], the sled would die as soon as you tried to give it throttle or shortly there after because it would be starving for fuel....Does it do this?
What happens if you turn back the main idle screw[counter clockwise]? Does it have any effect on the idle? If it does reduce the idle to 1500 RPM and see if it still hangs.

No it isnt starving for fuel because I can rip it up and down the yard with no issues, so I guess that eliminates the fuel delivery question. I turned the idle down as low as it would go and still stay running with no change in the hang.Maby once every four times I rev the throttle will it hang up around 4000 rpm. I guess i'll take it apart again.

try bypassing the tors just to see if it works....it will take only a minute to do it. I had that problem after cleaning the carbs this year.

I've seen this several times turn out to be the pilot jets.
You HAVE to hold them up to a light and make sure you can see a nice, round hole through them. Out of all the times I've cleaned my carbs, half of the time I've had to actually run a small wire through them to get the goo out...just spraying carb cleaner through them didn't do the job.

It wouldn't think it would be the TORS. TORS is a safety device that limits rpms in the event that the throttle sticks. It doesn't make the sled idle higher than normal.

Is it sucking air in around the boots/intake?

I still have a little bog. Found a washer missing in the fuel screw and fuel in the vent lines. I have the fuel screws out two turns.
How about an answer for this:
If I have 45 fuel screws now (stock) and go up to a 50 (only thing I can get local) what should I set the fuel screw at? Is this too big of a jump, or does the fuel screw distribute it accordingly?
Thanks,
Dave
