THis may sound stupid, but what keeps the ball from falling out?

It is pinched together between the two mating faces
Even maybe more stupid, if it's pinched, how can it move freely?

There is enough tolerance for the cutout to allow the ball to move around inside. That open end you see is only half of the weight, it gets closed together with an identical other half
Ahh, thanks, that explains it. I guess you can't replace the ball with a lighter or heavier one?

yes you can change lighter or heavier. the only thing ive heard is that there should be a spring inside to help out the backshift.
