Ovation ( 1990 ) Secondary clutch trouble ???

I can not take the secondary clutch off on my kids Ovation to make adjustments and so on,
It seems to have seized on the axle....
How do I get it off the axle ?

I am having the same problem as well on my 89 ovation. I have been told that it has probably rusted (my sled sat for 10 yrs before i got it) due to neglect and it is seized on.

I have been told to spray WD-40, or other penetrating lubricant into the shaft to try and losen it. I have also read to lift the track off the ground and remove the bolt and washer off the secondary and give it gas and then hit the brake. Apparently if you do this several times it will loosen up the secondary on the shaft. This is my plan for tonight and tomorrow night. I hope it works.
 
The secondary shaft on an Ovation is tapered like the primary is. They don't just slide off. Been awhile since I've pulled one but if my memory serves I think you can pull them like you would a flywheel or a steering wheel on a car. Take a look at it. Think "tapered shaft with a key"?? As I' said it's been a while.

One other thing. (this I'm sure of) The 485 Phazer chaincase/jackshaft/secondary/etc are a direct bolt-in to the Ovation chassis. Drivers are different but it is a more tuneable setup and allows more track options.

This sounds intresting !!

The problem is probably that a secondary clutch made for a Phazer-I / II ( 485 cc ) will not work well
on the little 340 cc engine on the Ovation / CS340
Any input ?

Sure it would. It would probably need to be readjusted some to match the 340's abilities but that should be it.

However, If you do something like this use a Phazer I secondary. It would be matched (diameter/width wise) with the ET 340 primary. Phazers II's have an overdrive setup (primary and secondary are larger in diameter) and have a wider belt.

The Phazer-I uses a YPZ primary clutch.
The CS-340 / Ovation also uses a YPZ primary clutch.

The C-C distance between the clutches is the same.
But they do not use the same secondary clutch...

How to set up a Phazer-I secondary to fit the CS-340 / Ovation ???

The problem as I see it is the Helix angel, Or... ??

5 ft bar and a good rubber mallet?
Put constant pressure on the clutch and couple good smacks close to center of clutch. Dont use a sledge or steel hammer. I can't remember, but can you get a puller on it?
 
;)! Finally I got the secondary clutch off the sled !


...But now I'm in to the use of a Phazer-I secondary instead

...How to set up a Phazer-I secondary to fit the Ovation engine power ???

The problem as I see it is the Helix angel, Or... ??

the helix angles should be fine the only issue u may have would be it shifting out to late i cannot remeber but all u should need to do is play around with the spring setting on the phazer secondary to get it to shift out right for your setup ....... the swap is verry easy

I took the complete jackshaft out of the sled ( including the secondaryclutch ) and then put it in a hydraulic press.



It was a bit tricky to get to where you could aply pressure...
but after you had figured that out there was no problem.

I applied pressure on the hub on the backside of part # 1 and the clutch poped right of. ;)!

Do you have to take the break and everything off on the right hand side, near the oil tank?

Did you unscrew #4 before putting pressure on it?

Do you think there is a way to get it off without taking the shaft out of it?

1. Yes, I opened the chaincase cover and pushed the complete axle out to the Left side of the sled after I had loosened the bearing mount behind the secondaryclutch. 10 minutes job.

2. No , You should not press against # 4.
You should press against # 1 ( the center hub on the inner sheave )










3. Maybee, if you have a small 3-arm puller that you could try in the outher sheave.
There is 3 holes in it where you could try to aply pressure.
In my case this was not enough.
Thats why I took the whole axle out.
