I have a 1997 mountain max 700 and did a compression test yesterday. Getting 117, 115 and 110 respectively. Is it time to do pistons and rings or am I OK for this winter and wait and do it in the summer time. What should the compression be on a brand new unit? Any thoughts?

I have a 98 xtc700 that has 130psi per cyl, I think 120-125 is normal you might be better off doing the top end.

My Venture Was 112 New
At 10,000 Mi It Has A Peak Head With A Peeled Gasket And Its At 135 Psi. Has Not Been Redone

So it was 112 new but it must of went up when it was broken in, I'm blowing 130-135 w stock gasket and 5500 km

You are "allowed" up to 10% deviation on compression. What kind of gauge did you use? The reason why I ask is, all gauges read different and some are of a better quality than others.

My sled is a '00 Sx700R and used to bump the compression gauge to 135 psi, the reason why I said "used to" is because I am now running an aftermarket head and have bumped the compression to 150psi using my compression gauge.

How many miles are on your sled?

I would replace rings, as you are getting close to the 10% difference between cylinders. I would be less concerned if all 3 were 117, would do them if all 3 were 110 on my gauge.

your reading will be lower on a cold dry cylinder verses a warm wet one. i check my gauge against regulated air compresser to see how close it is. when checking remove all the plugs hold the throttle open and pull multiple times and watch gauge to see when it tops.
