exhaust leaking on exciter

I am trying to fix an exhaust leak on my 1990 exciter where the Y pipe attaches to the motor. The complete gasket kit I purchased came with two metal/lead rings and two gaskets for the exhaust ports. My Y pipe has a counter bore machined in it. I used both, the lead/metal ring and the gasket when I reassembled and it still leaks. What am I doing wrong?

If I remember right on my 89 Exciter I only used the metal/lead ring you speak of. Don't think I put a paper gasket in it. Double gasketing sounds like a recipie for leaks if you ask me.
