I have to replace the front axle bearing on the clutch side. Can this be replaced without removing the chain case?

yes you should be able to change it without removing the chaincase. Loosen the two set screws on the back of the bearing, take all of the speedo drive/bearing housing off, and find a way to push/tap/pull the bearing off the shaft, and install the new one
to make it easyer loosen off the track tension. otherwise go to town.

The VMAX 600 doesn't have the set screws on the bearing. Just remove the spedo drive and the big nut behind that and the bearing will come right off.
