Hey guss noticed my tach dies when I put on my high beams. Rubbed wire? Where do I look?
Look under the motor, carb side. Had a sled last season which did the same thing. It was the stator

Under motor, remove pipes and silencer, unhook harness from hood and pull the harness back under motor towards carbs, repair wires tape and add some wire loom at the rub area.
I had the same issue, pulled the wires out they were not rubbed, added some loom anyways. Ended up being the stator.
I have also seen the stator or cdi go out... but the wires are the easy fix.
Wouldn't the stator take out the lamps and ignition too?

Dumb question...Is this at idle only? If so, check your idle speed should be 1800 + - 100

When the stator gets weak, its not putting out enough power at idle to support everything. My tach would reset when pressing the brake lever and switching to high beams. Also the farther the handwarmers were turned up the dimmer the lights got. Yamaha has an updated part number for the new stator so something is different, I replaced the stator and it works great now.
Axapowel: My idle is set, but I can't confirm if it is only happening at idle. We havent had enough snow out here in southeast wisconsin for any good riding. I plan on getting her out today and will report. I'll be pulling that wire harness too!

exciter89, I think you might have overlooked this guy is talking about a srx, not a viper.
snopax, Your wiring harness is rubbed thru under the engine, its not the stator.

Great!! Yea, I had her out a little earlier tonight. Not enough snow out here in SE wisconsin. Had fun in the field, wanted to make sure the jetting was right. Nice tan plugs!!!
Some electrical issues I need to work out including replacing a toggle switch the last owner used instead of the hand warmer rheostat > (CDI doesn't like it), the light for the speedo would come of an on, yadda yadda, nothing major.

My bad, I forgot other sleds existed besides vipers....

no, wasnt about other sleds exisiting, its just the srx has a differnt electrical system and does not have a liq. display unit, it uses analog guages. The key clue was it only did it with high beam switch, and it was running well, because the tach is tied to the same power source as the high/low beam switch....voltage induced, where as a viper recieves it(tach signal) from the cdi box..I am sure you knew that, my bad.. .

Not trying to hijack this thread.......but being I have everyone's attention to this subject.....about 2 seasons ago I was riding in the UP at night and every time I grabbed a handlful of brakes the tach would die and my lights would dim way down. This went on for about 5-8 miles of really rough trails and all the sudden I hit a BIG whoop and it went away. It has never happened since. I think the sled had a round 5000 miles on it at the time and now I have 7700. My assumption was it was the harness but I have never pulled it apart to look.
Lately though I notice every time I come to a stop sign the sled wants to start idling really high (around 4000 to 4200) almost engaging the clutches. If I rap the throttle it won't go away unless I give it a quick choke. My guess is slightly dirty pilot jets making it idle slightly lean.

lost my tach - the clip holding the sensor at the stator broke and took out part of the stator
