I got a 97 vmax sx 700 last year with a junk mag side main bearing. I had the bearings professionally installed on the crank and within 200 miles the same bearings went bad again. I am wondering if anyone has any info on what might be the cause of this. The case alignment is fine I have checked that. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

lack of lubrication to the bearing, bad seals? The fix fix this problem is to use a bearing from a 98. Its is one large bearing. You will need the collar and the locating pin along with the bearing. You also need to drill a hole in the case for the locating pin. There must be something else like the oil pump line going to the case.

The line from the oil pump to the case is fine the motor is getting plenty of oil. and the seals are good no leaks. I can do the 98 bearing as long as there isn't some other problem. Could something else be causing the issue. I believe the guy that repaired the crank used polaris bearings is it possible that could be an issue.

As Stein stated there has to be another "issue", when you had the bearing replaced did you put new seals in the case? Lack of lubrication is the FASTEST way to destroy bearings. Is the lube hole that goes to the bearings blocked in any way shape or form?
I have seen in the past that a lube hole was drilled and didn't clear the edge of the bearing(blind hole) and the bearings didn't get proper oiling.

no the hole is not blocked and yes it has new seals in it as well. anyone had experience with an out of balance clutch or flywheel causing something like this. Where can you get a 98 bearing I checked Babbitts and they said they are discontinued.

I dont think the 97 bearing is your problem...yes the 97 bearing had "known" issues, but I've rebuilt a 97 and also replaced the bearing with the 97 style and have no problems with it.

I noticed the nut for the flywheel was stripped out when I took it apart. I did have to use a puller to get the flywheel off is it possible the flywheel was loose enough to vibrate setting up a harmonic destroying the bearing.
