Hi everyone this is my first year running a 2002 viper. Will I be able to beat my friends arctic cat 800? both are stock as of now :bump:

He's got more HP than you do. I like the viper for the fit, finish, looks, and reliability. It's also a quick and agile sled. Those cats will burn down. Have you not seen the "downed cat" youtube videos? :)

you'll be in the lead when your towing the kitty to the nearest intersection!!!

be sure there is a means of towing packed with the tool kit!!! LOL

it isnt all about speed all the time, enjoy ur sled for what it is, my rev 800 beat the hell out of my viper on the trails, on the lake was a different story, now all i have is the viper and i will ride it and enjoy it

I guess we all agree you have the better sled just dont expect to beat him. You can expect to still be riding and enjoying your machine for many more miles!

so if u both ride together and end up at the same place, does it really matter who wins? just curious, isnt it all about enjoying the experience of being out there and connecting with friends? i preordered a rev 800 2003 for me and a 2002 viper for my wife, we had a blast all the time we were out, she passed away, i sold my rev now i have her viper, i will ride it and think of the good times we had together. i dont care about the ride or anything else, just enjoy what u have

;)! This is a great answer, best one I've seen in a long time here.

My brother is a die hard cat guy, had an 02' ZR800 EFI, with a Black Magic clutch kit, D&D single pipe and silencer and 144 studs. That was one of the fastest sleds I have been on (other than my SRX) and he put 4500 HARD-HARD-ABUSIVE miles on that sled and never had a single engine problem. The ZR800 will SMOKE a stock viper in any race you put them in period. I am a Yamaha fan but will give the ZR's kudos for being fast, light feeling and high on fun factor. Any sled can be good or a turd, most depends on maintenance and just paying attention to the sled and fluids. We always hear the horror stories but seldom hear the good ones.

the diamond drive zr's were not that fast my buddy has one and i wiped the ice with him. Later in the week we decided to clean his power valves now were dead even hes got a lil more snap on the bottom end tho, i'm clutched vforce, bender can so pretty much stock. whoever said a stocker zrt will win your crazy.

the ZRT's wern't even powervalve engines untill 2001 and the 800 ZRT never had valves. You should beat the 600 and run with the 800s...but you are not really concerned with the ZRT's (yet)lol. Ignore the crap about enjoying the ride...win the race!!! If you put some tripple pipes on your viper you will be a force to be reckoned with...right up here with our SRX's and I don't loose too many races.

Powervalves don't do a whole lot for top end, just help you get there faster.

yes its definitely about having fun and making friends. just wasn't sure if my buddy knew what he was talking about or just full of hot air. but I will definitely be enjoying my viper even if i'm the last one across the lake and i wouldn't trade it for any of my buddies' sleds

It depends on alot of things. Every machine varies in performance. Not sure what model 800 and year but it may depend on the condition and tune of his sled too. I know all of the responses say you'll get smoked but that was never my experience the first several years of owning my Viper (since new) I have run against a guy that came along on a UP of Michigan trip that owned a late '90's ZRT 600 triple triple. My sled was new that year and he was giving me a hard time that he was going to kick my azz on Lake Gogebic. It was exactly the opposite. I could literally toy with him up top. I still had the stock track on though. The next year he sold it and the new owner of the ZRT came along but he now had D&D pipes, bored carbs and porting. This time the guy barely eeecked me out only on the very top and he weighed about 50 lbs less and I had installed a new Predator 1.25" track which scrubbed some top end from mine.

On that same lake I raced a 2002 virtually new ZR800 carbed and I smoked it up top. A co-worker at my work used to own a 2002 ZR800efi. I rode with him in Wisconsin one winter and he could pull my by one to one and a half lengths on the Chippewa Flowage. The only thing was it was around 36 degrees so the fuelie most likely helped him. I never got to run him again.... he sold it. What I have noticed is my Viper really runs hard when the temp gets below 20 degrees F. Mine has been a runner over the years and the weird thing is my dad has and identicle one to mine with half the miles and it has consistently beat me 99% of the time. I have watched his smoke F7's, SRX's, XCR800 triples, Nytros and RX-1's. He has got ONE FAST stock Viper and I plan on taking off his hands in the very near future.

PS: we both run Heavy Hitters for clutching but the weird thing is I have the 48 gram base weight arms and he has the older HH's with the 46 gram arms which they don't make anymore. The other thing is he has very high stock compression compared to the numbers I see flying around here.

2009loren, the thing to do is just put in a clutch kit, its by far the biggest bang for the dollar spent! nobody is gonna see it, slip it in on the week night when nobody is riding, it will for sure give you an edge over the next one! :winterrul
