Was out carving up powder last night when I popped my drive belt... when I went to replace it I noticed my primary clutch was completely closed not giving me enough slack to get it on..so after messing with it for an hour or so in the pitch dark in the middle of a field I called my brother and had him come pick me up and said id try to retrieve my sled today.. I'm kinda at a loss here and not the most mechanically inclined and with my sled stranded in the middle of nowhere any advice, ideas and help would be greatly appreciated..thanks!
I'll bet you weren't running an OEM Yamaha belt.
Bring a good knife, vice grips, pliers as it could be as simple as the reminants of the belt is wrapped around the primary jamming it closed.
Other possible causes:
-broken clutch weight[jammed against spider or roller]
-speedo cable wrapped around primary...hopefully not!
If you have a spare clutch and puller[or can borrow either] you could simply replace it,drive it home and fix it then.

Is there a quick way to spread the primary clutch? I can't get it to open

Do you mean the larger 'Secondary" clutch? The primary is attached to the engine and it is the smaller of the two.
To spread the secondary:
- apply the parking brake
-kneel beside the sled
-grab the inner secondary sheave and rotate it clockwise and push it inward
To install the belt:
-have belt over primary clutch
-place belt edge over top of secondary ready to install
-spread secondary as described above
-once secondary is spread install belt down into and around secondary
-take park brake off and roll secondary to close it as much as possible
-start sled then lift back end off ground and spin track to get belt in proper position
-close it all up and you're good to go
I hope this makes sense and is not too basic, but I don't know your knowledge level.
Hope this helps.

I understand what your saying but the primary is closed completely. I know how to spread the secondary but my problem is I can't get the slack needed to get it over the secondary. I've never had this problem before because the primary has never closed on me before. I appreciate your help tho. Thanks

Never had one stick closed!
Obviously something is seriously wrong..if you don't see anything from earlier post that is obviously jamminng it...maybe take a large rubber mallet and bang it as you pull the engine over slowly...maybe it will pop it back???

If all was working correctly when the belt popped then check to make sure all the weights move in the clutch, this should be easy if the clutch is already closed. If one of the weights is bound against something you can probably pry it free with a screw driver but be careful because the clutch will SLAM open and take off a finger if you have it in the wrong place. If weights move freely then take a flashlight and look for delt pieces in the clutch and especially in the moveable sheave bushing area (outer sheave). You most likely have a chunk of belt or a cord binding it up. I don't know any secrets for forcing the clutch open but if you try be sure to use wood or plastic tools not metal ones because you do not want to damage your clutch.

I have always turned the inner sheave clockwise using the palm of my left hand to push it open (with the belt installed on the primary, over my left hand). Once the sheave is open I use my right hand to push the belt down into the opened secondary then wrap the belt around the back/bottom of the secondary.
Different strokes...

On further thought that is how I do it as well...been ahile since I have changesd a belt!
