I have put at least six ropes on this thing in the past two years. Something keeps tearing it up.
Does it run over the chaincase or on the side of it?
What am I missing?

rope has to be placed in the right spot.It has to run over chaincase, smooth area. And thru the coil just before it goes thru the grill.Post some pics for us to see what you have done with the rope..ie-locations

it should go over the chain case and held in a slot on the chaincase by a metal plate that bolts through a tab on the chaincase. there is an oem plastic guide you can purchase to reduce rope wear. it wasnt a stock item but it will fit. yamaha pt #8FF-1546C-00-00

Maybe this will help...

well it looks like that tab in the pic is broken off on mine. Any ideas?

go to a hardware store and buy a length of 1/2" or 5/8" internal diameter higher density white plastic semi flexible pipe... route it all the way from the recoil to as close to the where it exits the engine compartment... feed the rope thru, attach handle and now you'll have protected the rope the whole distance it lies inside the engine compartment...

try to route it without kinking it and as straight as possible... also make the rope long enough too as too short a rope will stop suddenly and break inside the recoil after a number of pulls.....

this is a suggestion at this point and not a proven solution as I haven't needed to do it myself, but have given it thought on a couple occasions... let us know if it works should you choose this venture... tj

Will do.. Good idea, was thinking the same kinda thing as far as protecting the rope.
Will try it tomorrow. Thanks

or find a new chaincase cover with the tab not broken off. I have seen them worn very thin but never missing. Maybe the last owner dropped it or something.

Yeah probably but I think the idea of protecting the rope all the way through would work the best. Maybe just use some rubber tubing or some braided coolant line .

Say Bob, just curious - whats the green bunge for?

LOL!...Good Eye!
We occassionally do very long rides and I secure a thin metal 4 litre fuel container against the chaincase for extra range when needed.

Cool. As weight conscious as you are I thought maybe it was some kinda speed secret.
