Hi last year I bought a 98 srx700 with almost 10 000 miles. What a great sled. I am going to try a new clutch setup since the clutch on it now is all original and has never been touched. The sled over revs 9200 plus. I read the following suggestion in turk's tips:
48/42 Helix, 89a-10 w/4.5g rivet in 1st hole and .8g in tip, 2-3 engagement shims, b-w-b primary spring, stock secondary spring.
I understand that this set up used an advantedge helix, since I was unable to get an advantedge I am going with a dalton 53-43 which should be similar. I have 3 questions:
1) Is the stock secondary spring (red) stiff enough? And how many degrees do I wrap it to?
2) I don't have a clutch puller for this sled, and the clutch has never been off. I want to make the above changes without removing the primary, how big of a pain is this?
3) Is it normal for old clutches to result in over rev? You would think that weaker springs would cause the sled to upshift faster resulting in engine bog.
* The sled is completely stock and I weigh 230 pounds fully dressed up, feel free to throw in any further suggestions.
Thanks

first thing, get the primary clutch off and replace bushings and the slides.Rollers must be worn down past specs and check the weights for wear. And the whole clutch will need a bath for sure with all the belt dust in there.Spring must be worn out also and need change.Pick up a clutch puller first thing, and not a cheap one as that clutch may be stubborn to get off by now.
2 things make em overrev
bad stock clutching
older worn belts.
98 700 srx had horribly wrong clutching
check faces for cracks if it,s been overreving for 13 years.
pv,s probably need tlc too.

They should have. The Yamaha dealership off Dugald Rd should have stuff.I went there for 4.5 rivets and reeds last season and they stocked them. But the Yamaha dealer on Pembina doesn't even stock belts. You always have to wait a week to get stuff in.Give the dealership a call. What part of the city do you live????

I have never had a Yamaha clutch apart (just a few skidoo's). The weights ride against rollers? What do the bushings and sliders do? Are the sliders similar to the buttons found in a skidoo? Thanks for the info bluemonster.

dealers don't want to stock much anymore..not worth it for them, but not even to carry belts is a joke.
Bushings and sliders keep the clutch running true when it is working..with no bind being present.I change mine now every 2 seasons on all cluches regardless of the miles on them.

I phoned Winnipeg Yamaha, they have the clutch puller, but had no idea when I asked about bushings, slides, and rollers. Would anyone know Yamaha Part Numbers for these items for both the primary and secondary. Thanks

go to Yamaha site and find your year sled and look up the parts and numbers there.
