Hi Guys:

I am replacing a jug, head, piston on a 2000 SRX.

Does anyone have a link to some pointers, or can share some of their experience with me?

My questions include

Getting the old piston removed from the connecting rod and installing the new one?

Is a ring compressor needed when installing the new piston?

Torque specs ?

Any othere things to watch for.

I have generally been able to push the piston pin out by hand once a circlip is removed on one end.A ring compressor is not needed as the cylinders are tapered slightly on the very bottom and you can just squeeze the rings by hand as you push the cylinder on, I like to lube it up good with some 2 cycle oil just before doing this.As for torque specs you could do a search, look in the technical section of this forum, or by a service manual.
 
If you've never done this before then the following tools will make life a lot easier.Piston pin puller,small pick set and I'm assuming you have a torque wrench.The pick will be handy for taking out the circlip in the end of the piston,you'll see a small notch in the piston and if you put the end of the pick in there the circlip should start out enough so you can get a set of needle nose pliers on it to grab it and pull it out the rest of the way.Just to be on the safe side though you should stuff some rags around the base of the connecting rod blocking off the base so that nothing can fall in there,trust me it can happen.
If you don't have a pin puller and the old pin wont push out easily a little heat on the sides of the old piston with a heat gun or small torch will help swell the piston.
Like SWEDE said you can squeeze the rings together and slide the cylinder on over without using a ring compressor,just make sure the rings are lined up with the little dowels on the piston ring landings and don't get in a hurry.And yes lube up the new piston/rings with 2 stroke oil,a light coating will do.
You should be able to find the torque specs in the tech section I always have to look them up,can never seem to remember those.The head is torqued in 2 stages other than that it should be pretty straight forward.
