OK. Here's the deal. I changed the oil in my chaincase last week. Filled it to the high side of the REV lines on the dipstick. Took it for a ride. 11 miles in to the ride at about 85 MPH I here a whine and then a grind. Put it on a trailer brought it home and tore it down. Bottom bearing was lunched. I stood the chaincase up on my bench and put the dipstick in. The oil level on the high side of the REV markings sits about level with the bottom of the bearing. New parts coming tomorrow. Anybody have any input on oil level?

The bearing must have been on the way out, it takes 8.5 oz. What kind of oil were you using? You didnt loose the drain bolt by chance? Oil shouldnt really matter iv'e read about guys using just about anthing with no problems. I use the OEM yamaha stuff but mobile one synt seems to be a popular choice around here. CCC

I used yamaha lube. I had about 2ounces left in the jug. I am wondering if my dipstick is messed up. Maybe it was manufactured wrong, slid down on the plunger. It just seems to much of a coincedence that as soon as I changed the oil it happen. The bearing had no signs of going out the weekend before.

PS. We got 22"s of snow last week and are getting another 8"s right now. ;)!

Per manual specs use the whole 8.5oz. I dont much pay attention to that dipstick. Mine gets bent to crap just trying to get it out around the pipes and e start. Atleast sounds like you will have it fixed soon. Man send some of that snow my way. We do have the cold just need the snow. CCC

There is alot of diff opinions on the oil. I use Amsoil chain case oil (look on link below)...never had any problems...

About the dip stick there should be 2 marks...one for standard and on for reverse....

Multi-weight gear/engine oil, tranny juice and fish oil but this is the first I've heard someone using Yamalube. Enough of anything should have kept things lubed for a 11 mile ride.

Are you saying you only had 2 oz. in the case? 2 oz. is better than nothing but maybe not enough at speed.

I'd index the dip-stick to an 8.5 oz. fill after fixing whats broken.

The only problem I see with this is this is a difference marking between the 2.

Not sure how much the reverse vrs standard holds....

Hoe much does the reverse hold?
