So, doing the normal last-minute pre-flights on my Viper ER, and sh*t.....noticed my chain case tensioner bolt and lock nut was gone. No problem getting a replacement, but could I have damaged anything inside the chain case running without it? Should I pull the chaincase apart to check it?

No way to know how long it was gone. I change my chaincase oil every season, so I must have forgotten to tighten the lock bolt last year.....

defiently pull the cover, it's only 4 or 5 bolts, and check every thing out, the gasket is reusable rubber gasket ;)!

shouldn't really have damaged anything.....mine did the same on my srx, and the only reason I knew is when I slammed the gas, it would slip....

Thx - Mine didn't slip that I know of....but I guess I will pop off the chain case cover anyway. With the reverse, it's a little more work removing the battery and the reverse lever mechanicals, but better safe than sorry I 'spose.....dirty work trail side...and it's in a heated garage now.

Can I run regular 80-90W gear oil in the chain case? Like to do the work today, and the Yammi dealer is over an hour away near work.....and I'm off this week. Yaaa!

I would pull the cover to just make sure everything is ok. I would hate to hear that it exploded because just replaced the bolt without checking.... :o|

rather be safe than sorry and cold stuck pulling sled home... :dunno:

Pulled the cover, luckily no damage ! Found the tensioner bolt and lock nut lodged underneath. Funny thing is that there was almost no lube in the chain case. Would it leak out through the tensioner bolt hole?

Anyone happen to know how much oil goes into the chain case on the ERs?
