What do guys do to clean their belts. I have heard that some people wash them in hot? soapy water and scrub them with scouring pads? If the belt is still within its wear specification can it still be no good? Does the rubber get hard after a certain number of years, making the belt less than ideal, even if it still has the proper width? I have two belts for my srx700 both still have an O.K. width but they are old. I am wondering if a new belt would have softer rubber making for different clutching.
How about putting in the dish washer? I have used this to wash clutches and clutch parts. It really does work great. Al

I wash my belts when they are new, before the start of each season, and after every ride. My only belt failures are buring a belt when stuck (secondary open) and having belts break the cords inside of the belt at 5000 miles.
We clean are belts with a scotch brite, scrub the edges and the clutches then wipe them both down with acetone.

Any thoughts on "old" belts. How old is too old? All three of mine are at least 3 years old or older, and I still have the original from 02 as my 2nd spare/tow belt.....

I have used acetone on mine, not saying it's the best thing but my original belt on my Viper went over 5000 miles. Changed it only because I thought it was time. I have that belt on my clutch guard as a spare. I am on my second belt on this sled and have 7700 miles total on the machine. Not bad if I say so myself. I think this situation is because of Yamaha making a darn good efficient clutch and the supplier of their belts making a darn good belt.

I got 4,000 + miles on my original Yammi belt on my 95 Vmax 600. My buddies used to give me a real hard time because I would not buy a new belt each year. I finally put on the DaycoMax belt I had bought as my spare, and it chunked up at about 1,500 miles. Had to put my old Yammi belt back on to get home.
Went back to OEM Yammi belts since, and never a problem.
