slp triple pipes

Hello there is it a good idea to put slp triple pipes on my 2002 sx viper? What would some of the pros and or cons to having them? Thank you much for all input.
 
If you are going to purchase any set of pipes for trail riding, SLP's are my choice. They make excellent horsepower and have a broad powerband. Gas mileage will go down 2mpg or so. Its your call. They are also quiet, so you won't get bugged my DNR.
 
the pros about slp pipes are they are very very quiet for pipes. pretty much the most trail friendly pipes and also they are very good directions. good jetting requirements and clutching. slp did their job and instructions and build.. they fit pretty damn good in the viper too.

THE CONS ARE that you have to run 93 octane which all pipes you have too but also you should proabably make sure u always get good fuel and make sure you get good coolant. i would recommend getting a srx base gasket and opticool head gasket and a torque limiter from yamaha or from any year srx. the bolt on to vipers. and also get a different cooler from a srx. the rear coolers.
 
I'll second the torque limiter !! Mine is on order and should be here next week. Mine started wearing belts last year. Turns out my motor shifted and the clutches were misaligned. Vipers also have a bad habit of breaking motor mounts especially after adding the extra HP from the pipes. And I also love the sound of my SLP pipes !! If you have the extra cash to spend get the ceramic coated ones. I have the black ones and mine are getting rusty.
 
thanks for all info so far the set i can get are used and for 300cdn is that a good price? what kinda hp will it do?

Dude ! For $300 CDN you'd be a foooooooool not to buy them ! You could throw them on ebay and double your investment ! The SLP website claims a total of 166 HP with jetting but I was assured that is a little high. I think stock Vipers have around 110 HP or so

I run a stock viper and a piped 780. If you don't care about the extra fuel costs have fun with the pipes. There is no comparison to the stock set up. The 780 is a wild beast! It takes some time and a considerable amount of money to build one right,EGT's etc, but once your done it won't disappoint.Even with the stock bore you'll be right there with any good running SRX and should pull away from any $16,000 apex. Money well spent to me. Happy Holidays.

they would dyno out at 118-122hp.
 
Yeah I've heard stock for the viper is 120hp. I believe SLP claims 33hp gain at top end - 15-20hp midrange gain. I just put SLP pipes on my 02 Viper this year and I love it... it's a different sled. I love all the power and how the pipes are relatively quiet but sound so good.

I recommend doing it right tho... don't want to blow your motor. Cooling is the biggest issue when adding pipes to the viper. At a minimum you should add a rear heat exchanger and an opti-cool head gasket if you keep the stock head. I'd also highly recommend a torque limiter and I put a new head on mine too for cooling and performance.
 
I love mine, wouldn't ever go back to a single pipe. My sled is set up more for hill climbing, and the pipes really help with getting the track speed up when in powder. The real world dynos I've seen put them around 143-146hp with the pipes.

I'd try to e-mail SLP and see if they will send you the install instructions...there is more to it than just putting them on and changing jetting and clutching. You have to strip the foam off the underside of the hood and put heat tape on it, along with a few other spots. I'd also highly recommend putting in SLP flo-rites and blocking off the under hood air to the air box, otherwise you'll have the nasty powder bog when riding off the trail.
 
I'll try to get a pic of mine under the hood tomorrow. I was also thinking about lengthening the hood harness and re routing it because even with the heat tape my harness is getting hard and brittle from the heat. The pipes are big and all but touch the hood.
 
I'd get the SLP Triple pipes and not even think twice about it. They really make the Viper more fun. I paid a lot more for mine. And SLP are nice as they are quiet and won't affect reliabilty. Not saying other triple pipes do, but SLP don't at all.

I second the engine cooling mods. I installed a Peak Billet Head with the water rail for extra cooling. An Opticool head gasket will aslo work instead.

Mine came with a rear cooler and you also want to be sure you have one of those.

Also, be sure you add an engine torque limiter or your will burn through belts. the extra HP will make your engine twist to the point where you will break the stock engine mounts unless you add it. The torque limiter is right out of the accessory catalogue, part # SMA-ENGIN-ST-AY. Easy install once the pipes are off, also.

X2 on the cermic coating also as they will develop rust otherwise...
 
UH - OH !!! I see there's a set of FLOATS on there !! They made a HUGE difference on my sled ! Did you fabricate or buy mounts or did you use SX mounts to mount them ?

Your can (muffler) is different than mine also.
