Hey guys,

i just picked up a 87 phazer for free, took it out for a ride, and everything seems to run great until i hit 5k on the tach and then it just levels out in speed, even at WOT, it starts no prob, rev right up to 5k no prob, drive good at slower speeds, so im not sure whats up. I replaced the drive belt bc the one on there a little work and seem to be a little larger than the OEM one, but still having the same issue. Carb have been gone thru and cleaned out etc... anyone know whats up?

hmm.. i could check that, i am also thinking the drive springs might be worn enough to not engage it correctly at the higher rpms, just waiting on a clutch puller for the drive clutch. also going to check the compression, maybe the rings are worn to much?

Pull the carbs, then have a good look at the reeds. Had the same problem with an 85 phazer. Had boysen reeds in it and one had a piece missing out of it. Put yamaha ones back in, back to normal. Just something to check, i thought mine was ignition.

Check carbs and clutches, esp. the rollers and bushings in the primary. replace springs and secondary bushings if old.
I had an electrical problem with one where the ground wasn't good anymore, had to add a thick ground strap from the engine to the chassis.

fuel filter in tank....its probably half clogged and not giving enough flow when at higher rpm's....had that issue also....They look good if you take them out but they don't flow enough....replace it. Will it start running real bad if you hold it wot for a long time over 5000. It should start to run even worse and maybe loose a cylinder as one carb runs out of gas befor the other.. maybe a couple of backfires etc....????
