In preparing for my trip out west I have noticed some specs call for jumping way up in pilot jet sizes but leaning out mains.... What's the deal? I understand leaning mains but why jump the pilot up drastically? My manual for my sxr's call for (stock machines) having 60-62.5 pilot size for 8000-10000ft
for my application with pipes I was planning on 137.5 mains and 47.5 pilots..... Or do I need to go way up with the pilot? I'm riding 8000-10000

Has something to do with the lack of air affecting the pilot signal. I've always jumped them up when going higher and it works great. Like the old Nike ads used to say "Just do it."

Never went that big. Have to look at my notes to see. Probably 50 - 55's though.

The Higher You Go In Elevation The Less Atmospheric (sp) Pressure You Have "pushing" On The Fuel In The Float Bowl. Therefore You Need A Larger Hole To Move The Same Amount Of Fuel. And Yes 62.5 Are Reccomended.

Thanks bolin22.... makes perfect sense when you put it that way!! I have 62.5's here in my assortment, so I will use them! My set up will be as follows:
137.5 mains
62.5 pilots
needles @ #3
adjustable fuel screws
does that sound adequate for 8000,10000ft for my piped sxr700?

I would call hauck and ask them their recommendations for that elevation with your mods.

hauck does not have spec's for that elevation. that is the set up i ran at that elevation. if it doesn't want to run good and drinks gas like crazy try a little 87 octane. that's what i ran in it.

What does octane rating have to do with guzzling fuel?? You must have had some other issues to get better performance on 87 octane. I notice the difference immediately if I run low octane fuel. That just doesn't add up to me!

I run 135 pto and 133.8 in the other two cyl. and whatever the high elevation pilot jet that Yamaha calls for in my 97 MM at 7000-8500 ft. This is with Power Inc and Bender pipes. I'm not sure what rpms the Hauck's run but mine run about 8300-8500. I think you're gonna be too rich if you go to 137.5 at 10000 ft.
