I Have a built to the hilt, old school 78 SRX. I haven't torn it apart yet but have dug back through the history of it. it was purchased at City Motors Yamaha, in bradford, pa, and immediately started getting screwed with. the guy that bought it was expecting the no holds barred performance of the 77 he owned. he commissioned a local 'sled guy' to go to work on it. We've pieced together, so far: it has the older, bigger carbs, was ported, and bored by a racer in Michigan in the winter of 79, had the head shved, the crank worked and rods and pistons replaced. We're assuming that it did a lot of oval track racing, as the right side of the track is substantially more worn than the right....
we cleaned the clutches, (was real doggy due to the remanents of a failed belt wrapped around the driven clutch, and not allowing it to work properly)...
The mix is 15:1. Another guy was there and said that we should mix a modern oil, (klotz, amsoil) at 32-1, or even 50 to one....and it would wake it up substantially. I don't wanna fry this thing.... is he right?
As it essentially a 'rat sled', (lil cosmetically rough, but with a perfect seat, bent bumper and little ding in the pan, ) I'm going to long track it, and possibly update the skid/track assy....I have $300 in it right now, and a resto is gonna be out of the question. too far gone....
