Hey all I am the new guy. I would like to know where to get the parts to put a longer more aggressive track on an 86 phazer. and also what is the best way to go about it.

Because the 86 has a 116 inch track instead of 121 inch, you will have to do more than add the 136 extension to use a 136 track. The easiest would be to use the whole ST suspension. Then you will have to fabricate a tunnel extension.
 
I just got done long tracking a 91...i used a polaris 133x1.5 track. i found the track and rail extensions on ebay, and dropped one driver size. then fabbed up some drop brackets. it works great, but you would have to have the 121 skid to start as said above. i recommend using a 136x1.25 track, you dont have to make drop brackets then.
 
if you have basic mechanical skills and access to a few common basic power tools along with the ability to measure correctly, you have alot of options for extending your sled.

sorry, didnt make it up to the cabin this weekend for the bolt on cleats due to uncontrollable circumstances.
 
oh no worries snowdad. I am just trying to go through all my options. this is just a rock sled to bang around here at home so I dont want to spend a ton of money just want some more traction. I think if I could get some traction and keep some of the power it could be a fun little boondocking sled. The trouble is that I am pretty ignorant to sleds. If it was a piece of Cat equipment I am in, so as far as the mechanical skill, I have that I just dont know what my options are as far as parts. I was told a phazer 2 skid and extensions to a 136 but then what track and what drivers does a guy need or is there a better way or a cheaper way? anyway I have rambled enough but I sure appreciate anything you guys can through at me.

the way i would approach the situation is to simply move the 116 skid back the the 2 1/2" essentially making it into a 121. then the aftermarket rail extensions will work. your set back can even be increased to reduce the size of the rail extensions.

its a straightforward job and can be achieved one of two ways. the first being grinding all the rivets from the stock tunnel brackets and relocating them to the new position. this method is labor intensive and requires the use of quality rivets on the reinstall of the brackets. i prefer the aircraft style buck rivet, but any steel mandrel and body rivet will suffice. get yourself an air riveter.

the second method simply involves making some new backing plates and riveting them in place.

either way i would suggest making some drop brackets for the rear. i usually drop between 1"-3" but make provisions for optional locations inbetween.

i am up to about my 43rd skid relocate and so far have not seen any negative effects. the biggest challenge has always been the fabrication of tunnel extensions and bumber supports. obviously these are mountain tested. just a thought. i am sure there are other options as well.
 
ok where would I look for a track? try to find one off of a newer phazer? or go with a 136. I dont want to lose all of the big power that this monster 480 is producing you know haha.
 
where you fnd a track would depend on what you want for a track. 121 or 136.
either can be found used for reasonable prices.
lug heigth would be your next decision as driver size may come into play. dont worry about a power loss. a gear change or drop in size of drivers will more than compensate for the lack of engine output.

i have found that they respond well with the 1" or 1 1/4" tracks and a gear change.
