i have my new or newer 2000 sxr 700...only 1400 miles on it.. it seems to go thru ALOT of oil... i filled it up, and after about 50 miles it took another quart of oil. once i figure out how to read mm, i will measure the oil gap.. oil sensor light also flashes on and off every now and then, i dont think this has anything to do with it. anyways, were these sleds known to have bad oil pumps? and are they known to go at that low milage? not sure what else to look at other then cable free play..if free play is correct, what else would cause execissive oil use? other then bad pump? i hate to pay my dealer to replace a pump.. but i have no idea how to do this..thanks...

Well you can look through the Tech FAQ and maybe that will help you out with the gap.
You need to see where your pump is at and then post back..

Check your oil cable adjuster. Sometimes that link in the oil cable gets pulled apart, simulating a more open throttle all the time. So you have to make sure it is pushed all the way together.
