I have had many people tell me that I needed to remove the oil pump every other year or so on my 03 Viper and grease the oil pump drive shaft or it could break. I pulled mine apart last night to grease it and found it had oil (yamalube) in there and the pump and shaft looked like new. Did Yamaha change the design for these things at some point and that is not necessary any longer or have I been told incorrect information? One of my buddy's said he had that problem with a 97 Yamaha he owned, the oil pump drive shaft broke due to not greaseing it and his engine blew up due to lack of oil. Any and all input would be appreciated. -Ed

I've never heard this, or never greased the shaft on my srx. 97's had a oil pump problem to begin with, pump would not regulate, flow but usually go to full flow then. Never seen of knew anybody to break a pump driveshaft.

You shouldn't need to grease the shaft because as you found out it sits in a bath of oil.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I should of posted here before taking it apart. It was not real easy to get to.
BigTimeFarmer- do you know how it get's oiled? (where that bath of oil comes from?) I'm just wondering. -Ed

one of the lines off your oil pump feeds it then another line feeds the excess to the pto cyl.Sheermadness03 said:Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I should of posted here before taking it apart. It was not real easy to get to.
