Well I got a chance to take out the sled today and hit the trails and a few jumps.. Well it came down HARD.. I dont know if its the shocks/springs, or both.. But after a little jump, and a little wheelie landing, that was it.. I can almost bottom out the front end by putting my weight on it.. Dont know how I didnt notice this
SO what do you guys think

Yep this is new to me.. Only thing It does need is shocks/coils.. Not sure exactly on the settings tho
Gonna look into everything tomorrow
Just any rebuild kit ok, or is there something specific/better etc..

Will need to be rebuilt by a reputable shock shop.........Unless you have the nitrogen, tools and parts needed.......

No Im gonna have someone else do it.. Just wondering if there was any specific kit
No,, just bits and pieces if needed to function ,,,,, otherwise cheaper to purchase new shocks............who ever someone is,, they should know,,, or send off and expect 45.00 per rebuild........
As others have said, shock overhauls and pull the skid and go through it via BeTheViper's write up.
Oh, and at the risk of being labled an old fuddy-duddy, put a helmet on. I know the chances are low for a major injury, but it only takes one blow over or weird landing to end up on your lid and wake up needing to be spoon fed 'til you die.
We take for granted being able to wipe ourselves until someone else has to do it for us. If not for you, think of them.
Sorry to sound preachy but this very thing happened to a good friend. He killed himself three years later because of what he was putting his family through.

99.9% of the time I do.. My mom actually came over to look at the sled.. Then she wanted to ride it.. So SHE had the helmet on

Cool.
Again, I didn't mean to sound preachy and I've done it my self... until my buddy's accident.

Motorsports plus in South St Paul, MN is by far the best I have ever used. I have been riding Yamaha for 30 plus years. tried alot of different guys. Jeff blows them all away. Tell him your riding style and your weight and he will revalve rebuild them. You will not believe the difference.
Do you guys think the shocks are just bad or a mix of the springs being weak too? My 97 took the same jump as the viper and landed like a marshmallow while the viper just slammed hard. Is a stiffer or even new oem spring an option ?

Ok don't bash me for this. I was told by quite a few riders who have older 2000-2002 sleds to not even waste the money on a shock rebuild, many ppl never touch their shocks at all and their sleds run fine. Like I posted above they said to try a new / stiffer spring

Springs just bounce. Good shocks are a must if you enjoy a good rideing sled.
If shocks didn't make a difference why would people spend so much money upgrading to a better one?

But when you jump doesn't a spring take the majority of the impact

yes and then when there is no shock to absorb the rebound it bottoms out and bounces back up = a shitty ridecomatoast said:But when you jump doesn't a spring take the majority of the impact

Many people never cycle a shock to it's oil's limit/point of fade.
Aside from revalving to suit the rider's style, replacing the oil is the primary reason for a shock overhaul due to contamination/breakdown.
And it's best to overhaul them in the spring rather than allowing the contaminated oil to sit in the shock all summer.
It's been my experience that some shock mfgs are less prone to required overhauls than others and IMO the type/quality of oil used is key.
Of course this is just my opinion so take it FWIW.

Yes, you may need to have shocks rebuilt but you guys can chime in too. The Stock SRX's and Vipers to my understanding aren't a good jumping sled.
