Sorry for posting again but I am new to the totally addictive snowmobile world. Other than the viper I have a 98 SRX 700 and I see everyone talking about the crank upgrade or welded crank. Can anyone kinda explain what everyone is talking about so I can see if mine has been done prior to my owning? And what was reasoning for the fix?

All the SRX crankshafts start out in multiple pieces and are pressed together. The original 1998/99 SRX crankshafts would slip slightly where they were pressed together and cause the piston/connecting rods relationship to be out of sequence with each other causing vibration and performance problems. The fix for this problem was to weld the crankshafts where they press together to prevent them from moving. Most 1998/99 700 SRXs should have been welded on warranty...the 2000/01/02 SRXs and all Vipers came welded when new.

Hope this explains it.

I don't think you can see the welds without taking the motor apart. If you feel strong vibrations in the handlebars your crank may be out of sinc.

dealer can check the vin and see if it has been done, most all were done, I have had a dozen or so I have junked and they were all done, havent ever had one that wasn't

Thanks for all the good info. The sled was owned by a doctor, he bought it new for his wife. It was very clean and was bone stock so I'm def. gonna check the numbers. Runs great with no vibrations for now.

When the update was done, the dealer was to mark the caeses. If this wasn't done, you can't tell by looking. Having a dealer check the vin would be the best way.
