If this sled sits even overnight, it takes a whole bunch of pulls to get it started. Sometimes to keep from wearing my arm out I pour a small amount of gas directly into the cylinders and it will start right up. No leaks that I can see. Motor is a "red head" 99. If its been sitting for a couple months I pressurize the tank to force fuel into the system.
My 97 600 twin will usually start in 5 pulls or less no matter how long its been sitting. Last time it only took 2 pulls after a sitting a whole week. This sled has twice the miles as the other. (5000+ vs 2500)
is it the nature of the beast for those particular motors, or do I have a fuel pump/other problem?

I think you may have an issue there, both my red head triples (99 700 and 00 600) start in 4 pulls max when sitting overnight.

Your losing the prime to your carbs somehow. If the sled will start with fuel poured directly in the cylinders, that gives the system time to pull from the tank an re-pressurize the lines. Almost like you need to look into your main fuel line for some sort of leak...
