Well, it's been rough trying to decide what to do and it's been a real wild goose chase. Since everyone was so helpful with my initial post, figured I'd fill everyone in and let then know what decision I came to.

Well, as soon as I posted the pics on here I went to logged onto kijiji (our Canadian version of craigslist) and started searching every province in Canada. I searched New Brunswick and there was an add with no pic for an srx in the parts section and it was listed at $1300. Only problem, the add was in french. I did see the word motor than the word after that was a word nais or ne or omething like that that I was sure meant not. I was pumped, I started trying to figure out the message and basically it was a 2001 srx for sale with a blown motor and a brand new ripsaw studded track. It took all my will power not to call them right then at 12am. Anyway next morning I call and they did speak a bit of rough english and I started asking them some questions. I was very specific that I was interested if it was in good condition with no cosmetic or structural and they assured me that it was in great shape, had the new studded track and aftermarket can and only problem was the motor and a crack in the windshield. I felt like the luckiest guy in the would. I was going to use that chassis and sell the track, can, seat, hood and whatever else I could and I'd just about break even and be on the snow by this weekend. It was about a 550km drive there so I was very specific again that I would come pick it up but it had to be in good shape. They assured me and by 2pm I left work early and was on my way. I drove through a snow storm on the higher elevations on toll highway (almost spinning out into the ditch) and lots of black ice on the other when I started heading north in new brunswick, but noting was going to stop me. I got there at 10 pm and it felt like christmas. They took me to the shed, opened the doors and there it was...

First thing I noticed was the hood was smashed, a lot. For a split second I remained optimistic, I already have a good hood. Than I noticed black plastic... that's not normal for a 2001, I look at the headlight, dual bulb, okay, 2000 plus, the tunnel and trailing arms are blue, must be a 2000, ok that's fine. The tunnel looked pretty wore, and I was feeling less optimistic, but I really wanted to get on the snow. Then I decided to check the date. It was made in 9/99, I was right, a 2000. Than as I start to get up from looking at the date, I noticed it. The running board was kinked exactly where mine was where the bolt goes through the eye of the arm and the trailing arm was bowed, looked at the other side, the bolt and running board was bowed but the bolt was good. Than I thought, maybe I can use it for the ohlins and other front steering parts and sell the track. Well, radius rod, tie rod and sway bar were all slightly bent on both sides. What about the ski, lifted it up. they had been run with no carbides and the plastic was wore through. Seat? nope, there was a rip in the seat and the tail light was smashed out. Track, nope, looked like mice had been at it because it was frayed in one spot (it actually wasn't too bad but it wasn't brand new like the *** said, skid, nope, shocks were all wore out, ANYTHING??? Yup, the ohlins were perfect. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have illegal thoughts in my head at that point. Then he asked me if I would take it for $750, no. Than $700, no. Than $650, no. Than $600. I almost had a moment of weakness and said yes, but there was no way I was giving them any money, not even $20 after what they had done to me. It cost me about $250 in fuel, almost going off the road, and 15 hrs of travelling. I arrived home another $300 poorer at 5am.

I decided to go to the local used snowmobile dealer today to see if he had any parts. He didn't, but he mentioned that he would be interested in mine for the engine. Then of course I started thinking about the viper that he had there. He said he would let me keep my seat, riser, hand guards and cables, and allow me $800 for mine. Realistically it was probably pretty fair. That took the price of the viper down to $2700+tx. So basically about $3000 to go out the door with it. I thought about it. The viper does look more modern and have a bit (not much) better stock rear suspension. But, out of the box it has a bit less power and there is also the fact that there are 35 vipers in my area that have been sold in my area in the last 3 years and I only know of one other guy who has an srx and he moved 5300kms away. I also like that the srx works way better than everyone expects for something that doesn't look that intimidating. Everyone thinks F7's are killer, but no one even knows what an srx is around here. So basically i came to the realization that I wasn't willing to put out $3000 which is going to cost way more than fixing it, and end up with something I liked less than what I already have. Extremely long story short I am going to have to sit out most if not all this season and try to get a new tunnel, front suspension and plastic, and I'm going to hopefully make a stock looking black monochrome srx. I hope to get the black plastics from the 98-99 srx. a tunnel and bulkhead from anything, but preferably a 01-02. and all the steering and front suspension parts from anything. Than I want to put the factory decals back on so that it basically just looks like a factory black option. I know it seems weird, but I feel that having this as more of a custom project than just having to fix it because I effed it up will help take some of the sting of having to sink some money into this sled.

I have found all these parts on ebay however, I appreciate the help that this site is to yamaha owners and friendliness and fairness of all the members and site sponsors that I have dealt with in the past, so I am going to first see what I can find reasonably priced from users on here before I buy elsewhere. Goto http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?p=513547#post513547 and if you have anything I need that's in excellent condition, pm me and let me know what you want for it.

Thanks,
Wayne

PS. Take that bluemonster1. I bet for the 1st time ever, I typed more words on here than you today ;)

Sorry to hear about the wasted time. Shows how many are shady! Makes for a great read though. Good details, I pictures myself right there :)

Eh...you win some, you lose some. Great experience though. You know, I saw few srx sleds for parts, or with blown engine on Craigslist. With pictures, or maybe help from forum members close to whats for sale, you still might buy one thats good and have it shipped to you.

Great post and bummer.

Since you'll be down to a bare chassis, you could use a Viper bulkhead and have a good start to a long travel/wide front suspenison.

I almost envy you since a fully blacked out SRX would be the ultimate IMO.
