I broke a tab on one of my floats on the wifes viper. For the life of me i cant get the pin out to replace the float. Tried a punch like before but no luck with this one, and i hit it hard. I was thinking of making a home made press out of a small c clamp but its the middle carb and i really dont want to take the rack apart. Any tips on this one? Thanks chris CCC

i have always used the punch method, never had a problem. just be careful and support the "towers", for lack of a better term. heard horror of people breaking them.

no insult intended, there is a head on one side, and the pins only come out one direction.

What he said. Did you get any of the other 2 out?

No i didnt try the other ones. Just wanted to replace this one quick as we were looking to ride tomorrow. I have gotten them off on my viper with the punch method but this one dosent want to move and like you said didnt want to break the towers. Will try maybe supporting them and give it another try with a punch. Iv'e never taken these floats off before. Thanks guys. CCC

I use one of those spring loaded center punch tools for removing the pin for the carb float. The punch I am referring to is has a spring release mechanism, you push on the punch until the sring releases and drive the punch pin. This device allos removal of the float pin without having the clamp the carbs, It also delivers enough force to drive out the pin but not break the float "tower".

I like the sound of that. Can I get that punch at any hardware/home depot? Sounds low impact, which is why I stoped to ask for help before I broke somthing. Thanks chris ccc

I just use a pair of small channel locks and gently clamp on the tower and end of the pin and it pops right out.Chances are you have something like this and then won't have to buy anything!I agree with the others about never striking anything in there!

Super,

Yes, you can get the automatic type center punch at Home Depot and Sears. Over the past few years I have bought one from both places. The other place you can order it from is McMaster Carr, they deliver overnight. I have been using this punch method for over 12 years, never broke anyhting and never had a float bowl pin I could not remove.

I use the same method only with needle nose vs. channel locks but have had the need to use a punch/finish nail-set.

The push pin punchs are typically used for center punching before drilling or breaking a window if you drive your car off a bridge (used by many fire departments/LEOs). You "cock" it, place it on the pin and push. I haven't used one on a carb but like the idea.

...and as SWEDE aludes to, striking anything inside the carb can be a wincing experience but if you support the post/tower closest to the punch and use the smallest/jeweler's hammer and start with light taps progressively tapping harder you'll get it out.

IMO just knowing how fragile the thing you're tapping on will keep you from breaking things.

It's the garillas that only play 1" drive tools (truck mechanics) this advise isn't ment for.

I had the same problem today. pb blaster and about 10 minutes later and it popped free. give it a whirl, not much to lose :)

i use a automatic center punch tool, like rx1jim had said. i've never had an issue and i think the automatic center punch tools are like $7 only.

Super,
How did you make of with the float pivot pin??

Ended up using the center punch tool as you sugested and it worked awesome. A new tool in my arsenal for sure. Took 2 or 3 tries but i think it was because i was learning how to use it. The other 2 poped right off first try. Thanks again rx1jim for the help. Sorry i forgot to follow up but just got off a long stretch at work and forgot. Thanks again. Chris
