My 93 (to new for here ?) ate the pto pist and jug....There are some older
540 engines avail from Ex and SR's ...will I be disapointed in slow and tow
performance of the VK ...Noticed same pist and crankcase since beggining
but diff intake , clutch inner mount and crank end from about 92 back..
Will the taper be diff ??
I use it mainly to set cross country ski tracks . It is lic and insured and has
a OFSC trail permit , but never saw a trail this year..and won't likely...LOL
...Had to resort to 75 TL433 to set track and it spent alot of time spinning
and the snow was coming over the hood but did the job..rather be sitting
on the "tank" and not worring about getting stuck ..My levelling pan
carries alot of snow in front of it when you dig it up rather than packing it.
Thanks
Ron

you are lucky i did some research into this last year when looking for clutching parts for a 1988 vk540. when you try and order it all up-dates to what is currently on vk540III. the topend gaskets are the same on the sr540. complete is different insome way but i do not think there will be too many problems putting a srv540 in there.

Thanks Maim...
Got clutch removed monday....going to need crank work
or complete drop in it seems..RH side full of almn powder.
and brgs feel a bit gritty..
It's amazing how it must have run with no seals..the
good mag end seal is damaged as if it was blown by starting aid but the pto end has 2 seals and the inner was just flopping and had popped the cover out of the oil pump
gear and was breathing air....since I never used any ether,
this disaster was in the making for 3 yr and about 150 miles.....
Lesson learned ..take compression gauge and ether with me next time I buy a "running" sled....
thanks
Ron

the old srv excel 540 from 1979 and srv engine are the same .,
also the same bottom end as a 440 ss . same everything you can bolt a 540 bottom with a ss440 top ss440 80 to 85
somewhere the srv got a bigger reed cage and used the it/yz 250 465 490. early side dump dirtbike reed cage and rubber intake bolt pattern
from what i know {not much but seem to forgot more then some ppl}
yamaha almost recycle ideas and part dimensions as the ss440 used a dt250 or 400 77 to 79 or i think the ty 250 reed cage with 4 row small reeds . you can buy either 2 identicle reed cages from yamaha dirtbike 75 to 80 that have 3 rows of large reeds or 2 from a 650x2 kawasaki pwc as theya re the same bolt pattern and get boysen 2 stage reeds wich will improve power at both ends over the 4 row small petal desighn .
wich i think they used them up to your vk
i have the cyl casting numbers of the large reed intake . personally i would try something myself wich is only a hunch that is make a small block that takes up space that increases crankcase compression lost in reed cage area just around the area where the crewes hold reeds inplace its just some dead area i dont like having
if i were to run the engine in your machine i would buy a set of newer wiseco pistons newer ones are electra coated to prevent the top ends from going "chernoble" so you can get her hot etc
the gearing is probabbly low on the vk like the venture
i have a 100$ ss440 that is my main ride its beat with like 8 k on her in miles motor was changed bad fuel pump wasted 2 piston crowns but she did not go into total meltdown mode

i dropped a used 20$ top end on it i coulda bought this dam excel 540 that was a severe wreck for like 50 bucks . still kicking myself in teh *** i did not know they unterchanged
i did port the cylinders some ..comet 102c.engages at like 3200 upshift at 6500 real well so she was clutched , soggy bottom end due to factory porting so a ventures gears are the same and will drop her down in a pinch
she gets about ten feet out and then full throttle goes annywhere but straight
some day i will have a 540 under her hood , need to slap my yokohama kawasaki track under her like brand new not a scratch ....
happy hunting

Wow AMCfreek......I can see the wheels turning, You have
been thinking hard about this. Thanks for the input about
piston brands and reeds.
There is a complete EXcel 540 for sale within a couple
hour from me . BUT 700$ and I just want the engine..
Hard to get VK with good track under $2,000 in Ont.
Might turn into a summer project unless a diff engine deal
works out for me.
currently guessing min of 900 for crank work(almn in all
pto side brgs) and install new liner and parts...plus tax.
About same as paid for sled 3 yr ago..
thanks

ron, try the guy in alberta. there was a guy scrapping 3 0r 4 2000ish vk540III 2 years ago. might get a motor pretty cheap. his name was posted for me on here but i forget it.

really rare to find a vk being scrapped. might find a venture 485 or ss 440 more easily.

let me ask brother what he is doing with the venture motor in the one he is scrapping. ran great butskis suspension and track where toast. bought it for phazer parts.
