I ve got a 98 700 srx , the other day it started throwing fits backfiring through the exhaust, erratic engine rpms, one second you can t get much over an idle, all of a sudden it will take off like a raped ape up to about 7500 rpms, then all of a sudden back to barely an idle and backfires when your trying to get your rpms back. My question is how do these act when the cdi goes to crap. Any insight will be appreciated. thanks in advance

Try putting some slack in the throttle cable adjustment. It sounds like it is to tight making the tps kick in.

You mean tors. 98's don't have a tps.
Ya i always get them mixed up but there is one behind the throttle flipper.Sometimes when the bars are cranked the throttle is to tight..and these days if you did not clean the carbs or use stabill when you put her away for the summer you end up here punching keys!

We were riding this sled earlier in the season, Seem to run ok. We ran it in the garage and changed track and gears to get set up for radar runs, pulled it onto the lake and it started running like shit. I thought maybe the cdi took a crap. I wonder if I inadvertantly unplugged or pinched something when I had it apart.

If you're using Stabil for storage instead of draining here in the states you'll be lucky if plugged pilots is the reason you're punching keys here.

Looks like Ontario isn't too far behind regarding ethanol mandates.

Sure pooring something in the tank is easier than syphoning fuel but syphoning is much easier than replacing pistons or splitting the case.

had the same issue with my '98. they had issues with wire harnesses chaffing, checked my entire harness and did have chaffed sections but ran the same after repaired. would run great but then lack of peak rpm's and flashing warning light. seemed to be worse once sled warmed up but was intermittant. low and behold it was a stator issue solved by the dealer.

Sorry for not getting back to this..been too busy working on this thing..I tried a differant cdi,,same crap, tried a differant stator and timing sensor,,same shit,,tried differant coils,,,same shit...in between times while I was waiting for parts ,I had the carbs out and cleaned them ..same shit...and I went searching for rubbed wires,,,nothing.. I take that back there was a time before I changed the stator that in ran good for about ten minutes ..then right back to crap...has a distinct backfire on one cylinder at an idle,,rev it up and it will blow the pipes off the manifold when you back off...any ideas ...bought this sled this fall and only put maybe 100 miles on it and nothing but problems,...should have stayed with Cats

sure sounds like intermmitant spark, I know you said "you looked" for wire harness rub thrus, but you have to actually pull the harness out from under the engine to find them no other way!!! if it isnt the problem it will be sooner then later, its either rubbed thru there and temp grounding the cdi/stator or its rubbed thru above the left footwell area at the cdi box, both are notorious problems that happen to all srx and vipers.

you have no other parts to look at since you swapped out the stuff and it made no differance.

Oh and I unplugged the throttle safety switch and plug the wires back into each other,,no diff. I about have the springs on the exhaust worn out from hooking and unhooking..This old girl is really getting frustrating..It must backfire all on one cylinder because the number 3 pipe gets alot hotter. Why would it missfire all on one cylinder?

10-4 mr. viper, found chaffed harness near left footwell, wires had turned green too up around handlebars on a couple splices. found mine chaffed under engine only after i had the harness out on the floor. could also have a broken wire with intermettent contact that you may not be able to find w/o proving out the harness with a multimeter???

I thought about that broken wire theory too..I can t believe the way they have the wire harness jammed in and pinched at every turn..the harness looks like someone else had been exploring too. areas retaped and whatnot.. wish me luck...
