I was riding today in barrie ontario with a buddy trails were mint very fast we were makin good time. We came to a stop and i smelt something cooking obv i checked my coolant and stuff. I figured it was polish on my new bender can or somethin cause everything seemed ok. I go to start my sled (02 viper) and the pull cord comes out and wont go back in. It didnt pull over the motor. No big deal got the rope out from my tool kit did the old clutch trick recoil went back in but didn't grab nothin. I take off hard for about 1km then i loose guages i think i lost power and i heard boom all at the same time. i poped the hood and shrapnel everywhere the cord was shredded huge hole in the housing peices all over the place!
my buddy towed me to the closest rode on his f7 (not cool) and doubled back to get the pickup. What a day! has this ever happened to anyone what would causse it to blow to pieces? Im very pissed off considering i just did a complete rebuild on it m10 swap bender pipe and can why does my sled hate me hahahaha
me!

This happened on my 99 vmax 600. Rope stayed out like you said started with clutch and recoil blew apart but it was into engine. Broke water pump belt, and stator. System must have pressured up and blew a coolant hose, got covered in A/F. Luckily it was all yammies we were riding with. There was no warranty but dealer got me warrenty on the stator. I always replace my recoil no when it is not working properly after that

So i take it all apart today and had a close inspection i noticed that 2 of the Allen bolts that hold the coupler onto the rotor were missing i found one of them and it wasn't shered the threads look fine. I unwound the spring and took out all the shapnel i cleaned the rotor and stator they both looked ok. I put it back together pulled it over from the primary she fired right up thank god! Lights and gauges all work just need a new assembly. Should have used locktite on the bolts i guess
