The 600 Twin STRIKES AGAIN!!!! BOOM!!!!!
This stupid f'in piece of junk heap of rubble did it to me again!!!!
As some of you know I had a bunch of trouble with my sled last year when I unknowingly bought a sled that some crook JB Welded the Crankcase and sold me as having a "fresh motor"!!!
So..... with the help of a few really good people and this website I was able to get it going again!!!
I replaced the Crankcase, Pistons, Rings, outer Crank Bearings, WP Bearings, Honed the cylinders, installed a new oil pump........ and it ran GREAT!!!!
This year Pre-season I installed new Shocks as the old ones were from an SRX and didn't work well with my XTC, replaced Radius Rods and Steering Rods as they were all bent, dropped the skid and replaced the Track, while the skid was out I replaced every bushing on every shaft, cleaned and repacked every single bougie bearing and bad wheel, made and installed a 3rd wheel kit on the front of both rails, and machined the rear axle bushing to allow for a 4th wheel on the rear axle, replaced all the bearings on the jackshaft, all the bearings on the driveshaft, replaced the bearings and seals in the chaincase, and spent 30 hours painting my exhaust!!!!
I also drained all the gas, cleaned the carbs really really well, replaced the rollers in the primary for the 4th time, replace the plastic buttons and helix in the secondary .......
Riding this year I was very very confident I would have the most reliable smooth perfect awesome XTC 600 anyone had ever owned!!!
With the help of the community here and the Tech pages I have piece by piece rebuilt this sled completely top to bottom!!!
I reset my milage counter and off I went excited I had a perfect problem free sled to enjoy for many years to come!!!
559.1 miles on the dial my sled slowly died, the lights went out, and I rolled to a stop.........I thought I blew a belt and it was going to be tangle around the clutch or something simple......
I opened the hood....... shined a light on the good belt and dropped to my knees....... put one hand on the primary to give it a turn and it barely would move
I siezed a F@#$%NG ROD BEARING!!!!!
WHAT THE HELL DO I DO NOW???
I CAN'T SELL IT, too many people have helped me get it where it is......
TOO MUCH MONEY HAS ALREADY BEEN SPENT!!!!
TOO MUCH TIME HAS BEEN INVESTED!!!!

This morning I was exstatic..... I have a friend Bobby who has been storing a sled for a friend Grody who moved to Colorado....
Gordy left the sled here because he wrecked it and trashed the skid, the sled was no good to him in that condition...... He told Bobby if he fixed the sled he could ride it.....
Bobby called me knowing I would be the right man for the job being it was a '97 SX 600 and I had completely been through mine.....
I spent 8 hours installing a new track, skid, and cleaning the carbs..... It ran like a champ!!!
Bobby called Gordy to tell him the news, he was excited and told Bobby to try and sell it..........
This morning I called Gordy and worked out a deal to mail him $500 for the sled and pick it up Wednesday, which would have been awesome!!! I could have made a triple out of my twin!!! and sold the rest of the parts to make some money back!!!!!
.......... I just got off the phone with Bobby....... the one who has been storing the sled....... who I fixed the sled for so he could ride a free snowmobile........
THE PIECE OF S#$T CUT MY THROAT AND IS NOW BUYING GORDYS SLED FOR $500 INSTEAD OF ME!!!!!!
WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man i think i want to cry for ya! First thing i would do is tear it down and find out why if you havent already. Thats free. Then with a fresh mind go from their. Fix it, part it (will be able to recupe some money ), or maybe another fun ty project. I think a little piece of that sled belongs to a lot of guys for sure and im sure it can be rebuilt. But man does it suck. Chris

For sure!!!
I tore it down......
as I removed the carb boot after the carb I found little beads of water settled in the grooves in the boot.....
I got gas at a station I'm sure doesn't sell much premium, but bought 93 anyway...... stupid..... stupid move I know better!!!
I think water in the gas took out the only bearing I didn't replace.......
Piston wash looked good, sparkys looked good!!!

The gas here has been bad also. Ive been riding couple times a week and always fill up the truck first and its still hit and miss. Dam ethenol. Best of luck and keep us posted. Chris
sucks dude. i feel for you. think the same thing happened to kirkswim's 02 viper on the jan ty ride in 2009. i filled on 87 but brothers filled on 91. i think kirk must have filled 1st as the sx500r ran like crap for a bit but ran the whole day. the viper had to be towed by me 10 miles to get to a highway where we picked it up. nospro and all the others looked at the plug and said it was running ritch but still did not save it. now we *** some seafoam to every tank of gas on it and have had no problems.
keep hearing about bad gas..... but this rain cloud seems to be hanging over this blasted thing!!!
I think I want to convert it to a triple........ but the prices people parting sleds for a living have created make it almost impossible to do anything but part your machine when something like this happens!!!
$1,000 or more for a complete turn key!!!!
I can buy a whole 1998 anything for $1,400-$1,500!!!!

this is the reason I run quickshot. I did see after having the sleds sit all summer this stuff kept my carbs clean and the gas did not separate.
I figured it is cheaper then replacing engine parts.
I am very sorry to here the problems you are having. I hope people learn from this bad experience you had and run gas treatment....
Here is what I am talking about...here it is

My carbs were clean as a whistle!!! cleaned them at the begining of the season!!!
Rode 559 miles..... bad gas in question came from a gas station I suspect not to sell much premium I purchased 10 miles prior and added to a half full tank!!!
do you add amsoil every time you get gas???
NIGHTMARE .......man travis sorry to hear that you are having that bad dream again ....and now your season is cut short cause you have nothing to ride if there is any thing i can do to help you just let me know

Yes I do. It helps keep the carbs clean and the gas from separating. Plus with the ethanol it can lean out your engine. This also helps it not lean out so much...
The stuff just works great.....

man i just went through this with a friend of mine, he rebuilt everything on his sled only to have the motor blow, bought a new motor had that one blow, at that point he had almost enough money in it that he would have had a good down payment on a new one. i said look, you found what blow the motor, you rebuilt everything on this one, fix the motor and you still have a totally rebuilt sled ! so he did and so far third times a charm hes never been happier ! his sled is the fastest of the group and the oldest! once you put money in it, your basicly married to it! (cheaper to fix then buy new) and if you decide to part with it you lose all you put in it. (work hrs. parts)

YA*AM*A*HEAD Your awesome!!! I appreciate all the help with the other issues and your continued generosity!!!
I have to get together with Pete when he gets back from riding..... I'm hoping I can get together with a few of my TY friends and put together an SRX motor and put this junk twin to rest!!!
I'll get ahold of you when I get a parts list going, you definately deserve some of my hard earned parts money!!!

That quickshot SE is brand new this summer, it is specially designed for small engines. http://www.amsoil.com/a/fuel-additives-performance-improver?zo=1130379 the original Quickshot works great for anyengine you have, Way better than Sea Foam! I use the Original twice a season on my 4 strokes, maybe i should look into the SE version?j_k_auto said:this is the reason I run quickshot. sounds like when I get a SRX motor dropped in I'll be using gas treatment!!!
Sooooo...... what does everyone think???
If I put an SRX motor in will it be a reliable sled???
Is it worth the work???
Does the year of SRX matter much??? If im not mistaken they were the same in '98 and '99, then changed 2000-2002......
What did they change???

dude, an srx motor will only fit in there if you single pipe it. better off to go with the red head sxr as it came in that sled. srx uses different bellypan, hood and frame. if you find one with atrashed tunnel, then you are ok but otherwise way too much work.
saw a few 500cc twin motors on here. same bottom end as your 600. would bolt right in other than carbs and clutch tuning. the 500's go forever and have never heard of one blowing up.

are you sure the frame is different???
wouldn't an SRX motor with a single pipe make more power than a Redhead???!!!
SRX Motors are WAY easier to get than a Redhead!!!

It's not the ethanol.
It's crappy gas, and old tanks holding that gas.
Th, I feel for you. This sux really bad. That would have been sweet to get that SX for that amount, and that rug got pulled out on you too.

I know...... I usually buy 87 at stations that are in question.....
Everytime I find a course of good fortune someone or something spins me out!!!!
TRUE FRIENDS are VERY hard to come by!!!!!!!!

I'm considering a Redhead 700, could be a '97 or '98......
????? How big of a deal is the PTO Bearing in the '97 ?????
??? OOOOr what issues did the '97's have that I can look for and recognize at a glance ???
