My viper is "supposed" to have a new (stock) primary on it. At least that is what the seller told me. He said he took it in and the service guy said he needed it. I left it at that. It looked like it just came out of the box too. No dust or belt marks on it.
Now the problem:
When I take off from a stop sign, or anytime from a dead stop, the sled tends to jerk when the primary engages. So i added shims (washers) to the back, just back from the squeaking point. If i add any more the belt squeals at idle. If i watch the clutch it will slam (slam is a little strong) shut on the belt causing the jolt or jerk. I have a new Ultimax XS belt on it.
So is it the clutch causing the jolt or is the belt that much better than a stock belt and I am not used to it? Or is it something else?
All bearings are good, new belt, chain adjusted...

what spring is in there..that may be the problem.Spring to weak and the weights overcome it to quickly..
Im not sure. There should be a paint mark on it right? Is that how I can tell?

go to tech section, look up your sled and year for the stock spring in there.
could be grooves worn into the weights,....

I tried an Ultimax belt a few years ago on my Vmax 600, and I had the jerky / squealing takeoffs, especially in deep snow. I went back to my Yammi belt, and the problem went away, and the Ultimax belt became my "tow" belt strapped to my inner belly pan. Are the Ultimax belts more sticky than the Yammi belts?
I know you said the bearings were good, But my VMax does this when the weight rollers bushings get bad!!!
I just spin them with my finger, if they spin fast and wobble I replace them!!!
Just my $.02

I agree - worn rollers or bushings can increase the force required to engage the primary. You will engage at a higher rpm (the more force part) which will make it "jolt".
Time to inspect and rebuild the primary I would say.

what rpm should it engage at?
all stock...
all stock...
Engage at 3900 rpm
Shift out at 8400 rpm
Shift out at 8400 rpm
It has the right spring... yellow - white - yellow.
Going to play with it this weekend. I'll try swapping the belt for an oem and also check the rpm's.
Thanks

Use an oem belt and check you center to center distance on the clutches. You don't want too much belt deflection, will cause poor performance and can also cause your hard engagement.
what should the center to center dist be on the clutches?
