I am looking for some help with my steering. My '96 xt has very stiff steering. Last year I was thinking it was the studded track that made it hard to turn. I bought a '95 Vmax for my daughter this year, and it turns really easy, even when stopped. My '95 has a lot of slop in the scissors (turns good). The '96 XT has very little slop in the scissors (it took me months to get it apart, so it moves up and down freely), but lots in the tie rod ends. I used PB on the tie rod ends and then dry film lube later. I can hardly get to the ones under the motor. Changing the tie rod ends isn't going to happen until spring. Is there anything else I should be checking? Something to grease (the ones on the side of the strut tower are done)? I put tons of time into my sled this year, and I keep kicking my little girl off hers.
Oh yeah, is there a valve to refill the gas on the TSS? I read something about that, but by the time I got the ski off (with a saw), I had other stuff to do. I had the rear shocks rebuilt this year and if I get the steering handled, would like to get those checked out. You really can't tell much if the scissors won't move at all! I love the people at this site. I have much less fear of screwing it up, because of all the info here. Thanks.

i just had to rebuild the whole front end on my max same deal the scissors would move but the bolts were seezed to the bushings and was verry hard to steer i completely tore the struts down and found the left side strut was sticking in the frame where the strut slides thru i cleaned all the old grease out of the frame and replaced it with some fresh grease and replaced the bushings/bolts in the scissors and on the ski holder steers really easy now

I will give it a try. It can't get worse! I never thought to clean that part, and I didn't use much grease when I reinstalled them. Thanks.

You could loosen up ur limiter straps a 1/8" or so to see if the skid takes pressure off the skies a little bit. It will make the steering lighter, but too much will make the sled not want to turn because there isn't enough ski pressure. You have to find a balance.
Sorry about my inbox by the way in my PM's I cleared out all my PM's yesterday.

T.S.S. Maintenance
On every used T.S.S. sled I've bought the Knuckles and steel bushing are almost frozen or completely locked up and pivoting on the bolts ! I've bought sleds that the locked up joints won't even allow the springs to return let, alone the struts to work when hitting a bump. The T.S.S sleds have always gotten a bad rap for slop developing when the ungreased steel bushing's freeze up they grind away on the nylon washers ! I have sleds that are 15+ years old that have never had a bushing kit and are almost as tight as new. Just take the knuckles and the ski mounts apart every other year and grease !

I think I have it! My right strut was binding up in the frame. A little work with a round file, new oil seal, and it moves very easy. I still don't know where it was binding. There were no scratches on the strut. I had a terrible time putting it back in, so i tried turning it before I reattached the scissors. Thanks.
