hi everybody, 2 weeks ago i took my 94 vmax 600 out and it blew up!
Ive had this sled for years running strong, even this year it was running good, intill i changed the gearing, when i first got it i geared it for less top end, so i decide to gear up for top end, i dont think that was the problem. This is what happen, started our ride good intill i hit a snow drift and it bogged on me but then it cleared up but shortly after it was dead:(. i have a gutted airbox and i think snow got in, i havent looked at the carbs yet, or could it just be old age?? Any help would be great thank you.

blown...

I would say some snow dust got in, but could be some junk in the carbs, leaning it out. Not sure if you have the ethanol blend fuels up there, but really causes problems with how toxic it is and does not stay fresh long (30 + days vented can), so you either run an additive like Startron Enzyme treatment or Amsoil treatment,or premium but the gas just junk today!

I have some parts for those years if you do need anything!

I just blew up my 98 Vmax 700 Triple...the mag piston looked very similar to that. Mechanic thinks it was gas related..I bought it used, didnt drain the old gas, then mixed in premium. Could have also been dirty carbs..I don't know but I'm in for about $400 parts for a replated cylinder and a new OEM piston...SUX because we are about to get 20+ inches of snow..although...it is my wife's sled ;)

The 94 VMax didn't have the heated carbs, and hated snow dust. The stuff would plug up the orifices in the bell of the carb and make it run like crap. There used to be some kind of filter cloth that you could put over the foam intake behind the windshield that helped. These carbs have to be dissembled and cleaned at least annually. Belt dust is also an issue. By gutting the air box, you may have leaned it out, but the piston normally would have a clean crown and a hole melted through if that was the case.

looks like somethin got in there and caught a ring, It dosen't look burnt to me

i would also be tearing it down to the crank and inspecting rods/bearings etc. and flushing/cleaning out any debris that possibly got down there.

is the butt pin still there, these year sleds were notorious for them working there way out causing the rings to snag on the ports and break causing failure..
