Taking a sled trip end of the month starting in Watersmeet MI, would like to go up one side of the peninsula ,all the way to copper the first day, stay overnight, and come back through Gay, then to Baraga, down the other side the second day, stay at the casino, then back to watersmeent the third day. leaving on thurs morning, and be back in watersmeet on sat afternoon. anyone do a trip similar to this? any pointers? snowmobiled in the UP before but not that far north.
That will be a nice trip. You will filter through Houghton on the way up as well as on the way back. Since you are leaving from Watersmeet, it is going to be later in the day by the time you reach Houghton. I would recommend taking the north loop up to Copper Harbor on the way north as it is mostly grade on that direction. The next morning you could take the southern loop while heading up Brockway Mountain in the morning when the sun is shining. You will probably want to top off the tanks in Houghton and from there you can make the journey up to C.H. without having to pit stop. Unless it is changed, you'll have to fill up at the old "ATM Booth" that is converted into a gas station. They take cash only so be prepared.
If the U.P. gets pounded with snow, I'd recommend sticking around for a few extra hours to play in it. You will notice the snow amount will increase the further north you go. It seems the real lake effect starts at Twin Lakes.
Have fun.
