Got a call from my friend on his way back from a recent trip. His 98' SRX has been running fine all winter. This past weekend it slowly began not starting on the 1st-2nd pull like it has for years. Eventually, it would no longer start at all. I am thinking of 3 things, wire rub-through under the motor, Key assy needs some contact cleaner or his stator is going south. Has anyone had this happen? He siad even when it was hard to get running once it fired up, it ran perfect. It just does not start after you shut it off. He says no spark..... I don't know for sure as I have not pulled it in the garage yet. TIA Doug
I think you pretty well have it analyzed.
IMO:
-check change plug caps, unlikely the problem but it may need them anyway and maybe you'll get lucky!
-wire rub thru, check under engine, under handle bar pad, up by guages, down by CDI as well[sounds like a rub thru so after checking/changing plug caps I would start there]
-stator...could be damaged from rub thru
-cdi...could be damaged by rub thru
-ignition or kill switch issues
-ALL OF THE ABOVE
