i have a 94 vmax 600 carb that sould be a tm38 and i pick up a set of 97 vmax 600 carbs with a tps on it. but looks like the 97 carb are smaller looks more like a tm36. what should the 97 size carbs be???? is it a tm36??? why would they go with a smaller carb??? and not with the same jets??? or i just have the 500 carb.

cool i didn't know about that page thanks
so why is there tm38 on a 94 and tm36 on a 97 if its the same 598cc engine and pretty much look the same? would you get more out of a 97 if you put a 94 carbs on?

As far as I know besides both being 600's they are not the same motor.
The Cylinders mine has are 8CR00 as you can see here. I think the 97 and 98 twins are 7 port versions and the 96 on down are 5 port. I might be wrong.

There was porting differences between the 94-96 600 and the 97 600's. Took different reeds, boots, etc. Don't know about the carb differences. I ran my 96 carbs into 97 boots, reed cages, and cylinders with a 96 head and 96 bottom. 94-96's had a 6 bolt cage while the 97's had a 4 bolt.
I think I still have a set of each cage and reeds... for sale btw...

I thought I posted this before I guess not. You should be able to see the difference right away between the 94 cylinders and the 97 cylinders.
On the second pic of my damaged cylinder your looking up at it from below. There are 2 small ports that are higher above the 5 large ports that ring the cylinder.
I've never thought about using TM38's on here. I do use 3/16" larger carbs (1 3/16" bore vs 1" bore) on my boat's motor and I get a lot more power out of it at WOT. I don't know why Yamaha thought that the 36's would be sufficient for the twin for both size motors.
