on '83 ss440- good spark no fuel to carb. replaced all fuel lines and vacuum line from crankcase, replaced filter in tank. Local shop has to order pump rebuild kit. I should be seeing fuel squirt from the pump output hole when I pull the rope right? I carefully took apart the pump- nothing looked out of order but I never opened one before so I cant tell for sure. Oh ya- filled up gas tank also.

my brothers ss440 has same problem. is there fuel getting to the pump? we fixed his temporarily by putting in primer ball before the pump. workin great so far. fired right up when we got gas to the pump.

I cant get it to pump up from the tank. I tried sucking on the line from the tank... seems to flow real easy that way- breath smells like gas now! I have run out of gas before and I remember that it started back up after refueling after 12 or so pulls- I dont know. Guess I will rebuild the pump and see what happens.

I just bought a 440, has the exact same symptoms. I can get fuel by syphoning but nothing when Hooked to the pump. HUH Maxdlx

rebuild the pump. sounds like the vacume diaphram is shot. or check it with vacume gauge to confirm.

and try cranking the motor over with a vacume gauge on the port from bottom of the motor. might have a stuck ring.

you'll like this...

Opened the pump, looked OK. Had compression on top. Decided to pull the carb. Got it in my hand and some SUNFLOWER SEEDS fell out! Those furry little b******! Took manifold off and found seeds stuck in the reeds. I just put the birdfeed bin out there and I guess the lid wasnt on tight. I hope they didnt make it into the case. Airbox will come off tomorrow. I hope thats it. I seem to learn something new everytime I pull it into the garage.

hmm sounds like its time to get a new cat.(not artic sc***) as for the bird feeder, put a coffe can on the pole so they cant get at the feeder.
