Is it just me or am I not alone??
I see so many threads/posts on HP, Mods, etc from guys wanting more, more, more and almost nothing in regards to wasted HP/performance via lack of maintenence, tuning and drive related problems (by comparison).
I completely understand wanting more but untill you are using all that you have what's the point?? This bugs me (don't thow why I should care?). Does it bug anyone else??

I know when I was younger, 20's. I always wanted more power, This came at a great expence. Reliability was completely gone, and the noise lever was not acceptable anymore. Now, we ride nearly stock, except for clutching. The availability to head out and just know everything is good is great to me. Just the other day, my Son and I ran over 100 miles on the lake at or nearly at 100% of the time at WOT. Now try to do that in a modded up sled. At this stage in my life, I want performance and reliability, plus comfort. The comfort percentage will gain in future years I am sure. Al

Most people that want more hp already have squeezed all they can out of what they have. There are people here that do not understand sleds and the mechanics of them and post and post and post with these mods and performance questions.
This is why we have a site like TY. To help everybody, new and the experienced.

I am only 22, and have already done the Mod thing, and am done with it. My Viper was bone stock, and I didnt touch it for a reason. I already had a modded sled at one time. It was nice to have, but the noise and gas useage just wasnt worth it in the end. It was cool to beat all my friends though!
Im not knocking guys that do alot of modding at all. I see the appeal. You then have more power, you can beat your buddies, and you can trash talk, and hopefully back it up. Just one of those things, been there, done that, and my love for it( and the money I spent) didnt last long

I have learned over the years that there is ALWAYS someone faster and with deeper pockets. I just got an '01 SRX this week and I plan on keeping it pretty much stock other than maybe clutching and the Viper skid I just put in it. I also have a modified quad that is plenty fast but by no means the quickest or fastest even with a Boss Noss 30-shot. It is plenty fast & fun right now and I still have some reliability.
I always get people asking me how fast my quad is. My answer is that I really don't know and don't care. I want to be "quick". I don't care about how "fast" it is. How many people really run their sleds/quads to top speed anyway?

ill mod my sleds to their full potiential all the time. more horse power the better for me I like being out front and getting the highmark. but I understand you guys who like riding stock, not many reliability issues to worry about

I understand mods and those who want to squeeze more out of a machine than what it originally came with. I do it too (depending on what I use the sled for). What I'm talkin about is those who just keep bolting on parts, rebuilding and blowing up engines, gutting airboxes, etc, etc, all in hopes of gaining more performance. many that do it don't have a clue what they are getting into and end up making things worse. Then comes the blame game. The "Why?" threads. And the product bashing.
I'm getting kind of tired of it. But what bothers me most is all the performance that is left at the table by those who don't want to do the simple inexpensive things to free it up like suspension/drive maintenance and tuning.
To me it is as important if not more important than HP mods and should be done first.
I'm not all the worked up on this but it is something I've noticed for a long time with forums (not just here) and have always wondered why there isn't more emphisis on the importance of maintenence/tuning issues??
This is the first page of the bible at vmax4.com as they know how big a difference it makes on those sleds but it dosen't seem to be as big an issue to anyone else.
weird?

One thing that I have found fascinating over the years is how reliable a yamaha can be when modified compared to some other brands. Its definetely testament to yamaha's build quality and the fact thing are generally made better than they have to be!Don't get me wrong I'm big on maintenance and optimizing whats there in a low buck fashion, but just saying!Tuning is big regadless of how many performance parts you've bought, Turk has definetely tried to instill that in many of us around here! What I think is funny is when a very well dialed stocker whips up on some sled with tons of money in speed parts spent on it lol!

Bolt on perf parts and mods are easier than actually maintaining what you have. People seem to be in such a rush to do nothing and go nowhere. Most posts here start of with " It was running perfect and then ___________". Then people post back "Did you clean the carbs or __________" Also seems that poeple are unaware of the Search option on this site.
How many people actually spend atleast 2 hours a week checking over and maintaining their sled? Every other ride I hoist up the skid and check bearings, wheels, w-arms etc... While out riding I make mental notes of things that I observe with the machine as in clutch engagement ,shiftout rpm and so on. When I get back I either fix it or write it down on a to-do-list. Jackshaft and driveshaft bearings get greased up atleast three times a season. There are sooo many things to check while in the riding season.
Sleds are like your significant other. The more time you spend "maintaining" them the more you get to "ride"

I'll get back to this later but funny,,,,,, wish I had the option of lifting and wrenching and TIME to work on my sled for every little tweak id like to do,........ But I dont,,..... so I make sure that everything is set to go at the beginning of the season....... Yes free horsepower is in the skid and running gear,, (drive line, rotating mass ),,,,,, do prepare the sled to top form, as in letting it ROLL and RIDE to its best potential,,,, set clutching for maximum performance for the type of riding you do, and know what it can do and live with the results,,, change if not satisfied,,,,,, for the engine,,,,, same thing do what is needed to perform at its peak,,,,,,( answers in the tech section.......).........

LOL! Me too. But I agree, keep the maintenance up first!

Maintenance should be number 1. I always laugh because
some say my sled is fast enough, others want a pro stock
sled for the trail, some are really content with what they
have. I see a lot of 800/900 sleds on the trail, when the way
they ride a 600 would be fine. Most always clutching/gearing
combined with traction are the great building blocks for
more performance.

All the power in the world won't make a bit of difference if you can't effectively "put it to the ground".

For the Terrain That I am riding, my mods proved to be very effective, but I wouldn't get anywhere without maintenance.
New This Season
Triple pipes are great for extra HP
Riser Bars make the sled more comfortable
Roller clutch is so nice
and CFR Rack because I love back-country snowboarding
and Amsoil this season is making my sled burn so much cleaner
I was gonna sell it when it was stock, but now that its been modded its so fun Im gonna keep it till its destroyed, I dont even want a new sled.

I like performance, but I have also been known to spend 17 hours polishing just a single snowmobile.....u have to maintain to be reliable in my book...

I also did te mod thing. it came at a price of always having something wrong it seemed. I like to do 100 miles in a day, and at times 300 if I can find the time. so for me, stock motor, clutch it, and get the suspension dialed in. I left the viper bone stock in that regard, just clutched it and eventually added a mono shock skid. love that sled, does all I want and has plenty of power on the trails

My sled has been modded a lot. But my sled (knock on wood) has been very reliable. Some of my mods have actually increased the reliabilty of the sled (i.e., my Peak Perf head with increased cooling capicity).
The worst thing I've done is the SLP triple pipes, but despite the pipes my reliabilty has not been compromised.
