i have been reading all the posts on heated grips and still i am having problems, my heated grips and thumb warmer do not work, they were giving problems for about a year would work perfect one ride and not the next. I have brand new grips on the sled, and have been checked with a meter. i have checked the riostats and are working with in spec. The yellow wire with a red stripe only has 3 volts at idle and goes to 7 at 3500 rpm. On both off my condensors i have 13.8 volts, the yellow/red stipe wires from the bars to the cdi test good with no breaks. The sled works perfect besides this. Any one have anything else i can check? does the stator have it own coils for the warmers?
thanks ian

Check the connectors under the plasctics near your right knee when sitting on the sled. They have been known to cause an intermitent problem

Last winter i had a similar problem. It was the key switch. Warmers worked some days and not others. Changed the switch and haven't had a problem in over a year.

If the sled does not have electric start then there are two positions on the key switch. First position is ign on and warmers off the second position is ign on and warmers on. Happened to me on my 97 sx.

do you have the current power from cdi box like in your first post???, as the power for the grips comes from the cdi box.
easy way to check is to hook up 1 grip at a time and see if it works, they are hooked in series so if 1 is bad they both dont work.
also you need to rev up the sled above 4000rpm or the new system doesnt produce much voltage to warm the grips, put sled up on a test stand and check.

ok will check tomorrow, but both my grips and thumb throttle don't work anymore, i was thinking about a broken or chaffed wire somewhere, i ruled out the cdi as i had another one to try.

also anyone know if the harness that goes under the engine has anything to do with the heated grips?

also just found my manuals i had downloaded 5 years ago on Hotmail, if anyone needs them email me
if both grips dont work you more then likely have a bad one, if 1 is bad NEITHER of them will work because they are hooked together in series circuit, thats why i dsaid, hook 1 up at a time and test the sled, youll know which one doesnt make heat.
the harness under the engine does not have anyhting to do with the warmers.

I believe the thumb element is wired separately on that model and there is a separate generating coil for the heaters. There is also a voltage regulator and it could be the variable switch. Make sure the wires from the heaters are getting to ground. There might be a wiring diagram in your service manual.

I have the same sled and had the same problem. I had a worn through wire under my handlebar pad. shrinkwrap and electrical tape and its been good for a couple of years so far. p.s. ;mine would work good for a while then quit. is your temp. light flashing a code?

no flashing codes, did a check on the stator and came out at .01 , i am thinking now that the stator is gone, headlight work fine and everything else except hand and thumb warmers, when i check the yellow with a red strip wire too the grips i only get 7 volts at 4500rpm.

still not fixed, any one have anything else to add?
voltage regulator or you got a bad grip! plug in one grip at a time and see if it heats up!

grips are fine. hooked up to a 12volt battery and heat up, Not sure how it can be the voltage regulator if everything else works perfect. yellow wire with red strip only puts out 3 .5 volts at 4000
I don't know either ,but it seems you eliminated everything else , replace it and see !

just out in the garage and did some more checks, voltage regulator is working perfect as 13.8 volts at each condenser, reostats are with in spec, changed cdi and still the same , i was looking at the wiring diagram and i think i may have the common wire for the reostats broke or grounded, will have to check and see tomorrow .

well after 3 years finally found the problem, wire under the tank for the rear grip warmers "which i do not have we chafed to ground" Thanks everyone for all the help!
