i posted a few days ago about putting a 2001 srx 700 motor in a 99 srx 700. i swapped stators due to the connections on stators were different. flywheels were totally different n couldnt use the 99 flywheel due to pick up mounts a lil different on the cases. the sled idles fine, runs good till about 7000 rpm n then that is all she will do. melted center plug after holding her wide open for about aa mile. guy on here said flywheel magnets are different n that i needed to take one of the magnets off. anyone ever heard of this? dont want to screw up flywheel so just asking. i mean of course magnet are gonna be lil different due to 01 flywheel is smaller. any info would be greatly appreciated...
no one with any ideas?

why wouldn't you use the 01 flywheel and stator?... they belong with the 01 engine... that goes for harness, CDI, coils etc...
I think what he is refering to is the fourth bump. you have three long bumps, they tell the pickup coil to charge the coils, think of them as on time. you old ignition uses these bumps to charge and to discharge, on then off, The newer flywheel has a fourth small bump, this tells the cdi box where top dead center is and when to fire each cylinder individually when it is needed.
when you use this newer flywheel without grinding the fourth bump off(which will make it out of ballance so grind that much off the opposite side(use a scale)you are messing up your timing. The space between the fourth bump and the long charge bump(or discharge??) is so close, that it may as well not even be there, the pickup is seeing one long bump. This is really messing with your timing and will effect only one cylinder.
I am not sure if the internal magnetic fields will cause any other ill effects with your charging system.
If you want to make sure, remount your pickup coil different. If you want that old flywheel to work on it, you will want to do a little grinding on the case, fill the factory threads with liquid metal, then drill and tap the new holes for the mounts.
I would first try grinding the fourth bump off and remove the same amount of weight from the opposite side.
If all is well with your charing system, your good to go and let everyone know what happens.

B.T. V now that makes perfect sense n i thank you. I just did relize there was so much different with these motors year to year. i think i should of just got 01 harness n redid it. you see i wanna rebuild that 99 so was hoping that i could just slap it in there n go with it for one winter but that just didnt seem to work for me. lmao. was hoping for quick fix cause this sled used to be a rocket n now it just sounds good. its shameful.. but thanks. i will try shaving that off n hope for the best but prolly wont be till the weekend cause i wanna ride.
oh, one more thing, seems like so much different with these year to year, does it matter with the balance of the crank running that 99 flwheel if i did do some grinding n redrilled n tapped the pickup coil? the 99 is lot heavier for sure???

The crank is ballance internaly, you can put either flywheel on that crank. vipers and srxes use the same flywheel on the newer models, 98/99 use the larger one. Now if you were going the other way, older srx motor into a newer, I would have bee trying to sell you a 2001 and up flywheel for an sx, they use a large older style flywheel with the four bumps.
makes sense, the only reason i question it is due to the fact that on a 99 the recoil side has the larger jet while on the 01 its the pto side. thought maybe bigger jet was due to heavier flywheelBETHEVIPER said:The crank is ballance internaly, you can put either flywheel on that crank. vipers and srxes use the same flywheel on the newer models, 98/99 use the larger one. the motors have different ignition system, timing curve, port timing and head cc so it's not surprising the jetting is a little different. The amazing thing is that they changed that much and the jetting stayed so close.
well shaved off the small lil magnet. didnt work. now the sled wont even fire. was worth a try tho. gonna just get another flywheel for the rest of this season then rebuild the 99 motor.thanks for the info.BETHEVIPER said:the motors have different ignition system, timing curve, port timing and head cc so it's not surprising the jetting is a little different. your going to ruin that engine running the wrong flywheel on it, your ign timing is all wrong. You have to either use the entire 99 system and remove metal from the case and drill tap the new loctaion for the pick up coil. other choice is to upgrade to the entire 2001 system ,which would be ALOT more work and expense,(warmers, headlight, wiring harness, warmer rheostats, cdi, but if you continue to ride it like it is, youll be rebuilding it from holed pistons shortly.
guess i could do that but lil nervous bout it not working n then i got piece of junk engine.mrviper700 said:your going to ruin that engine running the wrong flywheel on it, your ign timing is all wrong. if you put back on the 99 flywheel and space the pick up coil .025-.030" airgap from flywheel magnet, it will be exactly like the 99 was to begin with. youll have to grind some of the aluminum from the boss there now to fit the larger correct 99 flywheel, drill and tap 2 new holes for the pick up coil.
You either have to do this or you will definitely have a peice of junk engine running it with erratic timing and blowing holes in pistons, but, its your engine.....

well i just want to say thanks to mr viper n all who helped me out. i ground out the metal on the cases n redrilled the hole for the pickup n installed my 99 flywheel n man i feel like a kid at christmas. that sled is totally back to normal. rpms hit around 8600, i love it. so thank you all again.
